LAHORE, Oct 18: The police said on Friday they were yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder of a former senior tax official and were working on various leads.

The tax official, Mubeen Malik, who shot to prominence when he married film actress Anjuman many years ago, was shot dead along with his driver in Defence on Wednesday.

Mubeen’s and Anjuman’s young daughter suffered multiple injuries in the armed attack and was admitted to the ICU of Services Hospital, where her condition was said to be critical.

The police inquiries said armed men ambushed the car of Mubeen Malik, also chairman of the CBR Housing Society, at the doorstep of his Defence-A residence when he had just arrived there along with his 22-year-old daughter, Iman Fatima, and driver Rajab Ali on Wednesday night.

Quoting witnesses, a police official said the armed men sprayed the vehicle with bullets from two sides. The attack also sent a wave of panic among the residents in the surrounding area. The assailants fled despite that DHA’s security system.

The immediate target of the assailants was Mubeen Malik, relatives told the police and added they were blind to the motive behind the murder and identity of the killers.

A police official said Mubeen died on the spot while his driver succumbed to injuries in hospital.

More well known as Mubeen Malik, the real name of the 63-year-old grade-21 retired officer was Mubeen Gull Khan. He married film star Anjuman in the 1990s. Some time later there were reports the couple had developed differences.

Investigations DIG Zulfiqar Hameed told Dawn the police were working on various leads including the possibility of property disputes. He said it would be premature to say anything about the identity of the culprits or motive behind the murder.

The Defence-A police registered a case against unidentified men on the complaint of Mubeen’s brother Zarin Khan.

Meanwhile, Anjuman denied reports about her separation with Mubeen.

Speaking to the media, she appealed to the president and the prime minister to order immediate arrest of her husband’s killers.
