LAHORE, Aug 14: The Lahorites and the staff of Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) had a tough day on Wednesday as most of the city regularly losing electricity because of heavy rains and the Lesco staff struggling to restore it.

Around 108 feeders, out of total 725, tripped by the late evening if the Lesco data is to be believed, and only 10 were to be restored by the filing of this report. These trippings are counted as major ones as they take more than 20 minutes to be restored.

Lesco’s official spokesman Abdur Rehman said there was no loadshedding in the city on Wednesday, neither for domestic consumers nor for industrial units.

“The demand and supply was balanced around 2,000MW and there was no need for loadshedding. The only suspension of supply came through trippings,” he said.

Almost the entire city suffered long outages as suggested by reports from residential areas around Ferozepur Road, Shahdara, Garhi Shahu and Johar Town. Samanabad was the worst hit.

“There is no conclusive data as tripping of feeders and their restoration had been an on-going process for the last 48 hours,” says a Lesco official.

By the time one feeder is restored, two more trip. The fragility of the distribution system is tested each time it rains in Lahore and the system gets more rotten every day. Thus, the more it rains, the more wear and tear the system suffers.

It is a constant struggle for Lesco employees to run around, restoring a dilapidated distribution network. Rains only expose it further, he said.
