ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Senator Babar Awan on Monday said the incoming government needed a strong opposition to reinforce the narrative of maintaining good governance, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media personnel outside the Supreme Court, Awan said it was the right of the new government to complete its stipulated term; however, the opposition should not be of the government’s choice.

He added that the role of the opposition would now be determined in accordance with the Constitution and the rules of business as opposed to via any reconciliatory formula.

Moreover, Awan said the government as well as the friendly opposition was responsible for the issues confronting the country which could not be resolved in the past five years.

He said the new opposition could ensure check and balance with regard to the actions of the government, adding that there should be no underhanded dealings in the name of reconciliation.

The PPP leader said the number of suo motu notices should increase in the new government’s tenure and hoped that action would be taken against those responsible in cases relating to the Punjab Flood Commission and the Asghar Khan case in accordance with Article 6 of the Constitution.
