Girl axed to death

CHAKWAL, June 21: A man axed to death his sister and badly injured his parents, an aunt and a cousin over marriage dispute here on Tuesday, police said.

Police said Mohammad Akhlaque, a resident of Meenhwal village of tehsil Choa Syedan Shah, entered his house along with his uncle Shair Ahmad and cousin Shoukat Hussain. The three men armed with axes attacked Noreen Bibi, her parents, the aunt and the cousin. Noreen died on the spot while the four others were seriously injured.

They were rushed to District Headquarters Hospital. According to the police, the girl was killed over marriage dispute. Police have launched a hunt to nab the killers after registering a case against them. — Correspondent

Man electrocuted

ATTOCK, June 21: A young man was electrocuted in Jalaliya village in the limits of Hazro police. Kamran, 24, was switching on a water pump in his house on Monday night when he received electric shock and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, four students were injured during a clash between two rival groups at Government Polytechnic College here. The clash occurred over sending of an obnoxious SMS. The City police have registered a case against the students on the complaint of the college administration. — Correspondent

Gas supply not restored

ATTOCK, June 21: The gas supply to the three CNG stations, which were sealed by the SNGPL for violating two-day gas load management plan, was not restored till Tuesday evening.

The two CNG stations are located near People’s Colony and one near Teenmeala Chowk at Attock-Kamra Road. An SNGPL inspection team found these filling stations supplying CNG to the vehicles during the surprise checking on Saturday night. The inspection team removed the main supply valves of the three stations.

Meanwhile, sources said that a report had also been forwarded by the checking team to the higher SNGPL authorities for legal action against the management of the CNG stations on such violation. — Correspondent

Second pre-monsoon spell

ISLAMABAD, June 21: Light to moderate monsoon currents affecting upper parts of the country are likely to cause intermittent dust storm, thunderstorm and shower at isolated places in Punjab, federal capital, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during next 2-3 days.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) analysis on Tuesday said that rain is expected in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, Peshawar, D I Khan, Kohat and Hazara divisions during next 2-3 days. However, hot and dry weather is likely to continue in most parts of Sindh and Balochistan during next 24 hours. — APP

Landlord kidnapped

RAWALPINDI, June 21: A landlord was kidnapped from his house allegedly by one of his friends for a ransom of Rs20 million, police said.

Abdul Rashid was in his home at Chontra when his friend Ghulam Shabbir came and took him away last Thursday.

Taaha Rashid, the elder son of the abducted man, complained to the police that the kidnappers told him on the phone that his father was in their captivity in Rawalpindi. They demanded Rs20 million for his safe release, he added. He said the kidnappers had already got Rs24,000 from his father’s bank account.

Meanwhile, two gunmen stormed a jeweller’s shop in Sadiqabad in broad daylight on Tuesday and made off with gold ornaments and cash after taking its owner hostage, the victim and police said. Shahid Butt, the owner of the shop, complained to the police that the two men entered his shop and pulled out their guns and looted gold ornaments weighing 50 tola, Rs50,000 in cash and a cellphone. — Staff Reporter

Car lifter held

TAXILA, June 21: The National Highways and Motorway Police arrested a man on the charge of trying to smuggle a stolen car from Rawalpindi to Peshawar on Tuesday.

The police said after getting information that a car (LZM-9697) had been stolen from Pirwadhai, it mounted surveillance and intercepted the vehicle near Burhan interchange. The accused, identified as Imran Khan, was handed over to the police along with the vehicle. — Correspondent

Shops sealed

RAWALPINDI, June 21: Rawal Town Municipal Administration (RTMA) on Tuesday sealed five shops as the tenants failed to deposit the annual rent for the fiscal year 2010-11 by end of May 30. RTMA spokesman told Dawn that the rent of 2,400 shops amounting to Rs15 million was outstanding. However, the RTMA managed to recover Rs3.5 million of the outstanding amount till date. —A Reporter
