KARACHI, May 12: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Sindh police on Thursday claimed to have arrested four members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan including a student of the University of Karachi.

The city police chief said the arrests were made after an encounter in the Pirabad area near Orangi Town that also led to the seizure of arms and explosives.

“The arrested persons were associated with the TTP's Badar Mansoor Group,” capital city police officer (CCPO) Saud Mirza told a press conference at the anti-extremist cell (AEC) of the CID.

“They were planning to attack government buildings and senior officials of the law-enforcement agencies. Some of their aides managed to escape during the encounter.”

He said that Ma'az alias Irfan, a key figure in the group, was a regular student of the University of Karachi and was from an educated family.

He named three other suspects as Babar Iqbal alias Babli, Habib-ur-Rehman and Habibullah, and said that these members were also associated with the militant group that had carried out a cracker attack on the university campus a couple of months back.

The police officer also shared details of the arms and explosives allegedly seized from the arrested suspects and included suicide jackets, hand-grenades, etc.
