PESHAWAR, May 11: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police department has dismissed 41 police officers of different ranks including constables from service during the current year for involvement in corruption.

This was disclosed by Inspector General of Police, Fiaz Ahmad Khan Toru, while speaking at a workshop here on Wednesday. The workshop ‘role of society in eradicating corruption’ was arranged by Anti-Corruption Deportment. National Accountability Bureau, Peshawar chapter, Director General, Brigadier (retd) Mussadiq Abbasi, Transparency International chairman Syed Adil Gilani, Director, Anti-Corruption, Nisar Ahmad Tanoli and other officials spoke on the occasion.

The provincial police chief said police were fully alert to protect lives and properties of the people and had foiled 75 sabotage attempts during the current year in parts of the province. The few incidents which took place in different districts, he said, could be a reaction to the Abbottabad operation.

He said eradicating corruption from the police department was his top priority and the dismissal of policemen was part of his mission to overcome the menace.

Mr Toru pointed out that corruption had become a global phenomena and great challenge, saying, it was eating the very fabric of the society, and needed to be countered collectively.

The IGP informed the participants that after assuming the charge of his office he had issued “mission statement” making it his foremost duty to eradicate corruption from the force.

The police chief regretted that due to lack of public support corruption had gained roots. He said in complaints against police, people adopted compromising mood and 90 per cent complainants used struck compromises and thus wasted golden opportunity of accountability of the force jawans.

Mr Toru revealed that complaint cells had been established at central police office, regional and district police offices and asked the public to make best use of these cells.
