10 Indian fishermen arrested

KARACHI, April 5: The Maritime Security Agency has arrested 10 Indian fishermen and seized their three boats for fishing illegally inside Pakistan’s territorial waters.

A spokesman for the MSA said that during a routine patrol, an MSA team noticed some Indian fishermen busy fishing inside Pakistani territory and arrested them.

The held fishermen were handed over to the Docks police for further action on Tuesday, he added.—PPI

‘Assassin’ remanded in judicial custody

A suspect said to be involved in more than 100 targeted killings was remanded in judicial custody till April 11 in six cases on Tuesday.

The crime investigation department of police had claimed to have arrested Shahnawaz alias Ajmal Pahari after a shootout in New Karachi on March 28.

The suspect, who has been in the CID police custody on physical remand since his arrest, was produced before a judicial magistrate (central) in four cases on Tuesday.

The magistrate sent him to jail on judicial remand and directed the investigation officers to submit a charge-sheet on the next hearing.

The suspect was booked in two cases under Sections 353 (criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) and 324 (attempted murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code and 13-D of the Arms Ordinance.

He was also booked in two murder cases for allegedly killing Mohammad Munnawar and Rehan Ali in 2008 within the remit of the Bilal Colony police station. The cases (61/2008 and 153/2008) were registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the PPC.

The suspect was also remanded in judicial custody by a judicial magistrate (west) till April 11 in two cases registered under Sections 13-E of the Arms Ordinance and 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substance Act.

Meanwhile, the judicial magistrate (central) extended the physical remand of another suspect in seven murder cases till April 7.

Sheikh Iqbal has been charged with killing Abdul Khaliq, Qasir, Ali Raza, Mohammad Nadeem, Afraz, Talha and Rehan between 2008 and 2010 within the remit of the Bilal Colony and the New Karachi Industrial Area police stations.—Staff Reporter

21 ‘carjackers’ held

THE Anti-Car-Lifting Cell claimed to have arrested 21 suspected carjackers and recovered 35 vehicles during separate raids in the city during the last three days.

Speaking at a press conference, ACLC SSP Javed Akbar Riaz said that 18 cars/vans and 17 motorcycles were recovered in the raids.

Three pistols were also recovered from the arrested suspects, he added.

He said of eight gangs of carjackers had been busted. Of the 21 carjackers, six had been declared proclaimed offenders, he added.

He said that numerous fake number plates, blank registration books and various stamps were also recovered from the possession of the suspects.

The SSP claimed that during the first quarter of 2011, the ACLC managed to reduce the average daily theft or snatching of vehicles to 11.—Staff Reporter
