Steps urged to protect marine life
BEIJING, Oct 20: Pakistan has stressed stringent measures for curbing all kind of pollution, protecting environment as well as marine life.
Federal Minister for Environment Protection Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat said on Saturday after participating here in the second inter-governmental review meeting of the global programme of action for protection of marine environment from land base activities.
The minister said that on Friday he presided over the plenary section of the seminar. Foreign delegates attending the seminar also supported and adopted resolutions from Pakistan with regard to protection of marine environment from land base activities.
Mr Hayat said that he stressed stringent measures for protection of environment and marine life.
He said that the conference had adopted a resolution from Pakistan calling to curb not only coastal land-based activities which were adversely affecting the marine life but inland water resources should also be protected from pollution.
The minister said that there were many factors, including large-scale population, oil-spill from ships and smoke-emitting vehicles, which were adversely affecting marine life in coastal areas of Karachi.
The minister said that the delegate from Cambodia strongly supported Pakistan’s point of view for adopting a plan to protect mangroves, as his country also faced the same problem.
Mr Hayat said that he had highlighted various steps Pakistan had adopted for the protection of environment.
The minister said that the moot had called for adopting long-term strategy on environment pollution caused due to natural calamities, oil-spill, war in Lebanon and taking steps to protect marine-life.—APP
