NEW DELHI, Aug 9: The city of Mumbai has barely recovered from its month-old trauma of the serial bombing of commuter trains and now it is tensely bracing for the court verdict due on Thursday on the 1993 explosions that killed 257 people, police and human rights activists said.
The prosecution has blamed the city’s Muslim underworld for the 13 blasts that rang through India’s financial hub on March 13. The attacks are said to have been planned in retaliation for the demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya in December 1992.
Mumbai’s Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act Special Court Judge Pramod Kode has said he will deliver on August 10, but some reports on Wednesday said it was likely that the much awaited judgment would be delayed further due to a last minute legal wrangling.
On Tuesday, The Asian Age newspaper had quoted a government order as saying that state police are to watch out for Muslims leaving the country. But human rights groups said the story was exaggerated and was in any case not linked to the arriving court verdict.
