KARACHI: A young man was shot dead by robbers when he resisted their bid to snatch his mobile phone in a Korangi area, police said on Friday.

Zaman Town police said that Umair Husain, 22, was sitting outside his home near Karim Ground, Korangi No 4, late on Thursday night when three muggers riding a motorbike appeared there.

They snatched his mobile phone at gunpoint. Hussain tried to resist and got hold of one of the robbers but his accomplices fired two shots in the chest and rode away along with the snatched phone.

The youth suffered critical bullet wounds and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Funeral prayer for martyred cop

The funeral prayer of Sub-Inspector Yar Mohammed, 54, was offered at the Police Headquarters Garden on Friday, which was attended by senior officials.

He was shot dead by armed assailants riding a motorbike on Northern Bypass when he was going home on a motorcycle after performing his duty on Thursday evening. He was in plain clothes at the time of the incident and a police spokesperson said that he was targeted by “anti-peace elements”.

The victim leaves behind a widow and six children including four sons. He was posted at the Gulshan-i-Maymar police station.

He was the fourth policeman who was killed in the last few weeks in the metropolis. Previously, three policemen were shot dead by armed pillion riders in Mehmoodabad, Korangi and Saddar.

The police have so far failed to arrest the killers or uncover the motive behind the renewed killings of policemen.

Meanwhile, Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon said in a statement that several policemen had sacrificed their lives for restoration of peace, elimination of terrorism and fighting against criminal elements in the provincial metropolis.
