An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday granted bail to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader and Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar in a case relating to making arrangements for and listening to Altaf Hussain's incendiary speeches.

The jailed mayor has so far obtained bail in 37 out of 38 cases in which he was arrested. The cases relate to his alleged involvement in the May 12 mayhem, listening to Altaf Hussain’s speeches and treatment of alleged terrorists at Dr Asim Hussain’s hospitals.

The last case in which the mayor's bail is pending pertains to the treatment of alleged militants at Ziauddin Hospital.

The jailed mayor took his oath at Bagh-i-Quaid-i-Azam earlier this year, after he became the first person in the country to have won the mayoral election from prison with a comfortable margin against his rival candidate pitted by a six-party alliance formed to contest against the MQM.

Akhtar landed in prison on July 19 when an ATC dismissed his pre-arrest bail applications in a case relating to treatment of suspected terrorists and gangsters at the hospitals being run by former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain.
