Pakistan crash out of U-19 World Cup despite Umair heroics

FATULLAH: Pakistan wicket-keeper Umair Masood’s gutsy hundred went in vain as Pakistan were beaten convincingly by the West Indies in the last quarter-final of the ongoing Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh on Monday.
Masood came in to bat after Pakistan were left reeling at 5-57 in the first 20 overs and smashed 113 off 114 balls before being dismissed by Ryan John in the 49th over. The innings included 15 fours and two sixes.
The wicketkeeper was assisted by Salman Fayyaz in a sixth wicket partnership of 164 to help Pakistan set West Indies a target of 228.
The West Indies openers gave the run chase a flying start as Gidrom Pope smashed a quick-fire 25 before falling out to Ahmed Shafiq’s left-arm spin.
Pope’s opening partner Tevin Imlach and number three batsman Shimron Hetmyer capitalised on the good start and put up a 77-run partnership for the second wicket.
Pakistan Under-19s seemed to take control once again when Hetmyer was stumped off Shadab Khan’s flighted leg-spinner followed by Imlach and Keacy Carty getting dismissed in quick succession.
However, a run-a-ball 37 by Shamar Springer and Keemo Paul’s 24 of 16 helped the Windies U-19s cruise swiftly towards a victory in the 40th over, confirming theirsemi-final berth.
Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka are the other sides who have made it to the semi-finals of the youth tournament which ends on February 14.

Pakistan won the toss and then made a huge mistake when they decided to bat in fog and mist. Anyways this Pakistan team was the least talented of all U19 teams which we have had in last few world cups. Moreover I wish some one changes Pakistan's batting mentality of older times. As soon as we lose a wicket, we go in our shell and then we lose even more wickets.

@Cricket fan - and lose a perfectly good money making opportunity which might have come with a possible India Pakistan finale which is the mother of all finales and is watched by millions if not billions across the globe and in an ICC tournament which has always been India's sweet spot? That doesn't sound like BCCI to me. Why don't you just accept that Pakistan is no longer the world beating side it once was?

Proud of entire team for making the great effort however I have to criticize the skipper Zeeshan. He was mediocre with bat and leading the side. Didn't rotate the bowlers well enough and ended up giving away in first 15 overs.

I watched the match and I think some of the players have pretty good prospect and showed more maturity than the senior players. How come no mention of the leg-spinner, he bowled with a big heart and put pressure on WI.
Tomorrows match would be an excellent one, looking forward to India reaching the finals.

This WI team lost to BD 3-0 before world cup. I can't believe PAK lost to them. Not good sign for Pakistan cricket. I am expecting BD and India final.

Umpiring standard is very poor during this tournament. I have seen two matches, both were won by West Indies due to poor umpiring. Zimbabwe lost to WI by 2 runs due to their opener Snyder was given LBW, WRONG DECISION, that decision put Zimbabwe under pressure. During last match Pak lost to WI, again wrong LBW decision, Muhammad Umar was given LBW, which collapsed Pakistani batting. Why decisions were given in WI favor? Shouldn't action be taken against umpires? What message ICC is giving to emerging cricketers? Masood played EXCELLENT innings under pressure. Fayyaz must be appreciated too.
