WASHINGTON: The United States condemned on Friday the terrorist attack on Badaber as reprehensible and said it was still too early to fix responsibility for the attack.

At a news briefing in Washington, US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said: “The fact that this attack was apparently directed against people worshipping in a mosque and targeted the families of those who serve in the Pakistani military is particularly reprehensible.”

He disagreed with a suggestion that the attack indicated that the law and order situation in Pakistan was getting out of control.

“Sadly today’s attack is reprehensible but not new. We don’t (know) if this is particularly an uptick” in terrorist attacks in that country, he said.

The US official noted that Pakistan had suffered greatly at the hands of terrorists and violent extremists.

Asked to comment on Pakistan’s claim that the attack was planned inside Afghanistan, another US official said: “We cannot confirm reports of responsibility at this time and we refer you to the government of Pakistan for more information.”

The United States stood in solidarity with the people of Pakistan and all who were fighting the menace of terrorism, he added.
