DACCA: The East Pakistan Assembly today [July 2] unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Central Government to ask India to stop immediately further construction work of the Farakka Barrage till India came to an agreement with Pakistan on this issue. The Speaker Abdul Hamid Choudhury was in the chair.

Moving the resolution, Mr Abdul Alim (Government) condemned the unilateral Indian action in constructing the Farakka Barrage for diverting the flow of the Ganges during the dry season without caring for the interest of East Pakistan. He added this action of India was definitely a violation of the spirit of international law. Leader of the House, Mr Dewan Abdul Basit, assured the House, that the soldier President of our country would not give an inch of land to any unfriendly country and would take appropriate and timely action against any move which might be against the interest of Pakistan.

[Meanwhile, as reported by our correspondent from Karachi], the new import policy, announced last evening for the period July 1, 1965, to June 30, 1966, has been widely acclaimed by business and trading circles of Karachi as “liberal and dynamic”, and in line with the prime objectives of equitable distribution of wealth as laid down and enunciated in the election Manifesto of President Ayub Khan. A salient feature of the import policy, which has been particularly welcomed by the business community, is that it would be operative for one year and not for six months, as hitherto fore.
