BAHAWALPUR: Lawyers locked the main gate of courtroom of District and Sessions Judge Rana Masood Akhtar on Thursday to protest the Daska firing incident.

Bahawalpur District Bar Association activists boycotted courts for the third day on Thursday.

Lawyers got infuriated when they learned that Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Saeed Ahmed Sathiar and Deputy SP Rao Qasim were in the court to attend the district judicial coordination committee.

Lawyers, including bar president Syed Masood Gilani and secretary Tahir Jatoi, locked the court room and barricaded it with chairs. They also raised slogans against police and the government. Drizzle dispersed the lawyers who later gathered in the bar room.

After lawyers left the court premises, a peon broke the lock.

Bar secretary Jatoi denied that he locked the main gate of the district and sessions court.

CELEBRATION: PML-N activists and elected representatives celebrated Yaum-i-Takbir in Bahawalpur on Wednesday.

Punjab Minister for Cooperatives Iqbal Channar, MNA Parveen Msood Bhatti and MPA Fauzia Ayub Qureshi held functions at their residences. They praised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for going for nuclear blasts in 1999.

WATER: From June 1, the first phase of Saaf Pani project will be launched in 15 tehsils of Bahawalpur division and district Lodhran. A meeting, attended by Commissioner Saqib Zafar, heard water filtration plants would be installed in two months. The plants would be managed by community committees.

The meeting learned 78 percent of the work in Cholistan under a chief minister’s Rs3 billion package, had been carried out.

NIGHT: A cultural night will be organised at the local museum on May 30.

According to organizers, the programme includes lok music, tableau, traditional jhoomar, puppet show and Cholistani and Marwari dances.
