KARACHI: A two-year-old girl was killed and her mother, brother and a rickshaw driver were injured when a hand grenade allegedly thrown by a suspected gangster landed on the three-wheeler they were travelling in near the Moula Madad roundabout in Chakiwara on Monday, according to police.

Rasheeda died and her mother Gul Jabin, brother Ibrahim, 6, and the rickshaw driver, Anwar, suffered injuries, and were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi, said the police.

The incident appeared to be an outcome of a turf war between two rival gangs led by Baba Ladla and Uzair Baloch, said City SP Aftab Nizamani. He believed the grenade attack was carried out by members of the Ladla gang.

Police conducted a search operation in the area surrounding the scene of attack.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Mohammad Rizwan was shot at and wounded in Umerlane area of Chakiwara when attackers opened fire on him.

MQM worker shot dead

A worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was gunned down in Korangi early on Monday morning, according to Zaman Town police.

Saqib Rehman, 32, who was a hairdresser by profession, was standing outside his home in Korangi-2 when attackers shot him dead, said police officials.

They suspected the murder was an offshoot of a personal enmity.

However, a spokesperson for the MQM said that Saqib was member of unit-75 of the Korangi sector of the party and his killing was aimed at sabotaging peace in the city.

He said that Imran Abbas who was gunned down in Saudabad on Sunday night was also member of their party.

Guard gunned down

A 45-year-old private security guard was shot dead in Jamshed Quarters in the early hours of Monday, said police.

Mohammad Sukkur was performing his duty outside a bakery in Medina Colony when assailants opened fire on him and fled, said police officials.

They saw personal enmity behind the murder.
