BAHAWALPUR: Protesters blocked Bahawalpur-Hasilpur road on Friday night to protest death of a man allegedly because of brutal torture by the goons of an influential landlord near Khairpur Tamewali, about 45kms from here.

According to police sources, Irshad was allegedly caught red-handed stealing a transformer installed at the tubewell belonging to Mazhar Peerzada, an uncle of Federal Minister Riaz Husain Peerzada, on the outskirts of Khairpur Tamewali.

He was subjected to severe physical torture by some people, including servants of Mazhar Peerzada and was seriously injured, they said.

On being informed of the incident, the personnel of Inayati police station rushed to the scene and shifted the injured man to the local tehsil headquarters hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

To protest the killing, the family members and relatives of Irshad blocked busy Bahawalpur-Hasilpur road on Friday night by placing the body on it, raised slogans against police and demanded arrest of the culprits.

Because of the blockade, the vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear, resulting in long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road. The commuters in buses and vans remained stranded on the road for hours.

However, after police assurance of registration of a case and arrest of the culprits the protesters removed the body from the road and took it away for burial.

HONOUR KILLING: A man allegedly shot dead his sister in the name of honour at Israni village near Qaimpur, about 50kms from here.

According to police, Allah Ditta suspected the character of his sister ‘S’.

On Saturday, Allah Ditta noticed his sister talking to someone on her mobile phone. This infuriated the suspect who opened fire, leaving her dead on the spot. He then managed to flee.

Police have registered a case against the suspect.
