Good teachers needed

Published September 17, 2013

THIS is apropos the letter ‘Teaching profession’ (Aug 24). It is misery when a person cannot pursue a desired career or is less ambitious and becomes a teacher as a last resort. In reality, a teacher should be a person who instills the best in you to produce top-notch managers, doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, teachers, etc.

However, in Pakistan we are trying to reap crops from barren soil.

When the malpractices of a doctor or engineer or manager cause death or harm in society they are sued. But a teacher is never sued who is the root cause for all evil.

Improvements are not only subject to material incentives; rather it has to be scrutinized how much they are satisfied psychologically. It was Confucius who said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

The reason why teachers are not effective is because most of them never like to teach. Besides, the profession is considered to be unglamorous therefore they find them far behind the race.

Notwithstanding the fact that public-sector teachers/lecturers are paid well if we compare the services they provide with the remuneration they get.

Either teachers are extremely satisfied with their pay so they stop struggling, as George Bernard Shaw said, “Satisfaction is death”. Most of them concentrate on part-time teaching jobs for making their life lucrative, as they have more spare time in comparison to other professions.

Teachers/lecturers are monitored too well in the private sector.

The profession needs to have self-accountability, contentiousness and integrity and it can be done best by the teacher/lecturer herself/himself and not others as the teacher is akin to a leader.
