KARACHI: The Government has decided to decentralise Pakistan Railways and entrust the administration of West Pakistan Railways and the East Pakistan Railways to the respective provincial governments. The change in the administration will take place from the next fiscal year (July, 1962).

According to an official announcement, the terms and conditions for transfer of railways to the provincial governments would be determined by President Ayub Khan on getting expert advice from a committee comprising central and provincial representatives. The committee has been directed to report by March 21.

The decision on decentralisation was taken at the weekly meeting of the cabinet on the basis of the recommendations of a cabinet sub-committee which debated the question for two days last week in Rawalpindi under the chairmanship of Minister for Economic Coordination Mohammad Shoaib.

The decision will be incorporated in the new constitution which is likely to be announced on March 1.

‘Island of Peace’ CHITTAGONG: The ‘Island of Peace’ was formally inaugurated at Gohira yesterday by the Belgian Nobel Prize winner, Father Pire. He described it as the first Island of Peace in the world and a model for the rest of the world.
