NEW YORK, Oct 20: The Russian Federation’s United Nations mission in New York was not amused when it received a letter from Senator John McCain’s campaign committee on Monday asking for donation towards his election campaign.

Senator McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, who has been a strong critic of Russia, blasting the country over its policy in Georgia after its intervention in the former Soviet state, has not endeared himself to the Russians, to say the least.

In a terse response to the solicitation of money, the Russian mission reminded the McCain campaign: “We do not finance political activity in foreign countries.”

A text of the Russian response follows: “We have received a letter from Senator John McCain requesting financial contribution to his presidential campaign.

“In this connection we would like to reiterate that Russian officials, the permanent mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations or the Russian government, do not finance political activity in foreign countries.”

No one from Senator John McCain’s campaign office in New York was able to respond to the report immediately.
