SRINAGAR, Aug 9: Nine people, including an elderly Muslim and his son, were killed on Saturday and overnight in occupied Kashmir, where the residence of a state lawmaker was also attacked, police said.

Police said a group of suspected rebels barged into the house of Mohammed Khursheed, 60, in the village of Kasblari in southwestern Poonch district on Saturday morning, shooting dead both him and his son Shamim Ahmed, 30. It was the third time this week that a father and son were killed in the region.

The spokesman said Indian troops overnight shot dead three Kashmiris who belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen in the Doori Mal forests of another southern district, Rajouri.

In Poonch, a security force soldier was killed in an ambush on Saturday, while in southern Doda district two more Kashmiris died and four security personnel were injured in incidents, the spokesman said.

An Indian army soldier was also killed in an ambush by Mujahideen in the village of Targali in northern Kupwara district on Saturday, police said.

Elsewhere, suspected Kashmiris tossed a hand grenade at a bunker set up in the residence of Ghulam Hassan Khan, a lawmaker in Shopian township, 50 kilometers south of Srinagar.—AFP
