MUZAFFARABAD, Oct 29: A man was killed and three others were injured when rival political groups clashed near here on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred in Badhiala village near the hill resort of Chikar after supporters of Raja Farooq Haider who were celebrating his success in Saturday’s by-election in LA 28 Muzaffarabad V clashed with the supporters of Ashfaq Zaffar, candidate of the main opposition People’s Party.

Police sources identified the dead man as Chaudhry Nisar, who was the polling agent of Mr Zaffar.

Two of the injured people, who also belonged to the PPAJK, were identified as Akbar Hussain and Salam Deen.

An official said a case had been registered at the Chikar police station.

According to unofficial results announced by Election Commission officials on Sunday, Mr Haider had won by securing at least 24,005 votes as against 18,932 votes bagged by Mr Zaffar.

The seat had fallen vacant after the death of PPAJK candidate’s father and veteran leader Sahibzada Mohammad Ishaq Zaffar of cardiac arrest on September 2.

Mr Haider had lost to him by nearly a 1,000 votes in the general elections.
