LAHORE: Army and Police players compete at the inter-department rugby event.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) organised the Inter-department Rugby 7’s Championship at the University of Lahore main campus here recently.

Top three teams Army, Police and Wapda contested in the event.

The tournament was based on a round robin format, with the team gathering the most points to be declared the winner.

The first match was held between Army and Wapda. After defending brilliantly for the first half against Army’s persistent attacks, Wapda’s defences gave way to an onslaught by the Army who secured a one-sided 31-0 win. Tahir and Nasir from Pakistan Army were the main try scorers.

The second match was played between Wapda and Police. The match turned out to be an upset as the new Wapda team performed extraordinarily to win the match 26-0 against the experienced Police outfit.

The last match of the tournament was held between Army and Police.

After a surprise loss to Wapda earlier, the Police squad seemed out of sync, due to which Army were able to penetrate their defence several times. After dominating both halves, Army finished the match by winning 43-0. Tahir, Nasir, Farooq and Javed were the main try scorers.

Major Shafqat Mehmood was the chief guest and presented Army with the winners’ trophy while Wapda received the runners-up’s trophy.

Tahir Yaqub of Army was named the player of the tournament.
