KARACHI: One more policeman was gunned down in strife-hit Lyari on Thursday morning, bringing the death toll of law enforcers in two days to four, said police officials.

Constable Abdul Rahim Niazi was returning home to Daryabad, Lyari, after buying fish when gunmen opened fire on him, said Lyari SP Shahnawaz.

He sustained two bullet wounds to the head and died before getting any medical help. The victim had had an altercation with the suspects near his home on Shah Waliullah Road before the attack, added the officer.

The victim who was posted at the Baghdadi police station was in civilian clothes at the time of the attack and the suspects also took away his pistol and mobile phone after the murder, he said.

“We are trying to ascertain as to whether some gangsters were behind the murder or it was the outcome of some personal dispute,” said the SP.

Suspect killed in ‘encounter’

Police shot dead a suspect in Clifton late on Wednesday night, according to Boat Basin police.

They said that two suspects were roaming about suspiciously near Chapal Resort apartments in Clifton when a police patrol indicated them to stop but they tried to escape away by firing at police.

When police returned fire, a suspect was wounded and arrested while his accomplice managed to escape, said the police.

He was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he died during treatment. The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue for identification.

The police claimed to have found a pistol in the suspect’s possession.

Factory worker killed in Site

A 25-year-old factory worker was gunned down in Site on Thursday evening, according to police.

They said that two suspects attacked Shah Rasool near the terminal of 1-D bus when he came out of the factory in Metroville after performing his duty. He sustained critical injuries and was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was declared as dead on arrival.

“The murder appeared to be an outcome of some personal enmity,” said Site SP Fida Hussain Janwari. He said the family appeared to be reluctant to share information with the investigators.

The victim, a resident of Manghopir, originally hailed from Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Man shot dead

A 50-year old man was shot dead in Baldia Town late on Wednesday night, said police.

They said that Aurangzeb Khan was attacked outside his home in Rasheedabad. The body was shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi. The police suspected some personal enmity behind the murder. The victim was a former policeman who had married four times. He had allegedly killed one of his wives, said police.
