CBR move to check IT record opposed

Published December 12, 2001

LAHORE, Dec 11: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed concern over the CBR decision to examine the income tax record of exporters for apportionment of expenditure on account of local taxable sales and export sales.

In a press statement issued here on Tuesday, LCCI president Dr Javaid Chowdhry and vice-president Yawar Irfan Khan said that the decision would cause panic and uncertainty amongst exporters as it would empower the assessing officers to unnecessarily demand requisite documents from businessmen engaged in exports.

Export business, they said, was the most documented sector in the country in which chances of tax evasion of any kind were very remote.

They appealed to the Central Board of Revenue chairman to direct regional commissioners to refrain from this exercise so that this business could be continued in a friendly and cordial atmosphere.—APP

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
