UN chief 'alarmed' over renewed military confrontations between US, Iran

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has criticised the renewed tensions between Iran and the US after an exchange of military rows, which prompted President Donald Trump to declare the ceasefire with Tehran “over”, Anadolu reports

“The secretary-general is alarmed by the renewed military confrontations in the Gulf. The incidents that we have seen over the last 24 hours risk derailing the diplomatic progress achieved between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States,” Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says during a news conference.

He warns that “a return to full-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences for the people of the region and for international peace and security and for the global community, global economy as a whole.

“The secretary-general calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid any further escalatory action, and take immediate steps to de-escalate,” Dujarric adds, noting that Guterres “recalls the obligations of all parties to fully comply with international law, including the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and respect for navigational rights and freedoms”.

READ: What are the risks of an LNG tanker explosion?

A Qatari tanker loaded with liquefied natural gas (LNG) is at risk of exploding, one source has said, after it sustained significant damage in an attack on the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

While the LNG industry has experienced a few accidents at onshore facilities, there has never been a catastrophic LNG cargo-tank explosion on a commercial LNG carrier at sea.

Recent targeting of energy shipping vessels by belligerents in both the Ukraine and Iran wars has raised concerns, however.

Lebanon to attend Rome talks only if Israel withdraws from 2 'pilot' zones: diplomatic source

Lebanon demands Israel’s withdrawal from two “pilot zones” in the south before participating in the next round of direct negotiations in Rome next week, a diplomatic source familiar with the talks tells AFP.

“Lebanon is stipulating Israel’s withdrawal from two pilot zones in order to participate in the round of negotiations,” the source said.

The Lebanese diplomatic source said the US State Department told the negotiating delegations that “reaching a framework agreement is the end of one phase and the beginning of a new one”.

The next round — aiming for a permanent agreement — required the negotiators to be close to their countries “for consultation”.

The source added that Israel was quick to accept Rome as the location for talks as an opportunity to “reduce the pressure” imposed on it by Washington during negotiations to reach the ceasefire and framework agreement.

He added that Iran must respond to Trump in “his own language … apparently, he understands the language of force better.”

US violated Islamabad MoU through 'unilateral actions' and 'aggressive attacks' against Iran: Baqaei

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei says that the United States has violated the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’s (MoU) structure through its “unilateral actions” and “aggressive attacks” against Iran.

In a social media post on X, Baqaei said, “The memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, from its very first step, was not established on the basis of trust, but rather on the clear mechanism of ‘commitment for commitment’; because there was no sign of good faith in the opposing side’s behaviour.”

“Now, the United States, despite the explicit provision of the fifth clause of this memorandum—which emphasises the Islamic Republic of Iran’s responsibility in determining arrangements for the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz—has challenged this clause and, in practice, violated the agreement’s structure through its unilateral actions and also aggressive attacks against Iran.”

He stated that Iran would “steadfastly” pursue the protection of its national interests and the exercise of its sovereignty.

Trump unsure about making deal with Iran, would rather 'just finish the job'

US President Donald Trump says that while the current Iranian leadership is “rational”, he does not want to make a deal with them and would rather “just finish the job”.

Trump is responding to a question asking why he would label the Iranians “scum and sick people” after previously calling them “smart people”.

“When you say rational, I think they’re more rational than level one and level two,” he says, referring to Iranian leaders killed over the course of the war by Israel and the US.

“This is level three, I think they are more rational, but based on their actions over the last week or two, they’re not doing a service to the people, and I think more than anything else, since I got to know them and I’m not sure I want to make qa deal with them,” he adds.

“We can play games but I’m not sure I want to make a deal. I’d just finish the job.”
