Saudi Arabia warns of potential danger in Yanbu oil hub as Houthi attacks continue

Saudi Arabia issued alerts warning of potential danger in Yanbu, the kingdom’s Red Sea oil export hub, as Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis continue attacks on the kingdom that have opened another front in the US-Israeli war on Iran, Reuters reports.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen said it destroyed a missile launched by the group towards Islam’s holy city of Medina. The kingdom’s civil defence also issued emergency alerts for the southeastern area of Sharurah that borders Yemen.

The Houthis had yet to claim any attack on the kingdom on Thursday.

Iranians burn giant poster of Trump and Netanyahu, demand revenge

Following the drubbing of US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in the midterm elections, Iranians set fire to a giant poster featuring the American leader and his allies at a rally in Tehran, AFP reports.

In the capital’s central Enghelab square, crowds gathered to observe the burning of the poster which also featured his Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The war was started by Trump and Netanyahu, who launched a massive wave of surprise attacks against Iran which killed supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei and others on February 28 and sparked the wider Middle East war.

The cheering audience waved red flags to demand revenge for Khamenei’s death.

Middle East crude oil premiums tumble to pre-war levels amid ample supply

Spot premiums for Middle Eastern crude benchmarks returned to levels seen before the Iran war this week as ample supplies weighed on the market, while cooling refining margins in Asia slowed buying interest, Reuters reports.

Middle Eastern producers ramped up crude exports in September and October, which JP Morgan analysts said has created a surplus, despite rising attacks on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The wave of supply has depressed Middle Eastern crude benchmarks this week to their lowest premiums since July, when an initial agreement to end the US-Israeli war with Iran enabled more Gulf oil exports through the Hormuz strait.

Dubai’s cash premium to swaps slumped to 65 cents a barrel on Monday, the lowest since July, before recovering to $1.55 a barrel on Thursday, Reuters data showed.

Saudi coalition intercepts missile fired at Madina after warning issued for Yanbu

The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis has said that a ballistic missile fired by the group at the Madina region had been intercepted, AFP reports.

The announcement came just minutes after the kingdom’s civil defence agency warned of potential danger in the area near the strategic port of Yanbu.

It was unclear if the two events were connected.

“Air defence intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the Madina region,” coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said in a post on X.

Yanbu, on the Red Sea, is the terminus of the East-West Pipeline that allows Saudi oil to bypass the blockaded Strait of Hormuz.

The port and pipeline have played a key role since the outbreak of the Middle East war, helping Riyadh ship crude and fuel to global markets.

'Losing gambler energy': Ghalibaf responds to Vance's X post identifying Iran war as the cause of midterm loss

Iran’s parliament speaker Bagher Ghalibaf slams US Vice President JD Vance, describing his recent X post as “losing gambler energy”.

Hinting at US President Donald Trump’s supposedly America-first policies, Ghalibaf writes, “Boss is prepping the next war phase while America teeters on an Israel-First cliff”.

“Skip the TED talk. Why not say this to your boss?”

Vance’s post in question was about the US midterm election results, in which the Republicans lost to the Democrats.

In the post, Vance had said that the Republicans had lost due to the Iran war.

Oil rises as investors weigh risk of Iran war escalation

Brent crude futures rose on Thursday as investors weighed the risk of a further escalation of the US-Israeli war with Iran after the losses suffered by US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in congressional elections this week.

Brent futures were up 34 cents, or 0.36 per cent, at $94.96 a barrel as of 0825 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 27 cents, or 0.31pc, at $87.85 in choppy trade.

China's November diesel exports to ease amid thin domestic stocks, sources say

Chinese refiners have sold roughly 500,000 metric tons of diesel for loading in November so far, according to traders and Reuters calculations based on trade data, with multi-year low domestic stockpiles limiting exports, Reuters reports.

Fuel exports from China, Asia’s major swing supplier, have been volatile since the US-Israel-Iran war broke out in February as the Chinese government imposed curbs to prioritise domestic supplies, requiring refiners to obtain approval for sales each month.

However, since China began relaxing export controls in July, diesel exports have surged to multi-year highs to 1.33 million tons in August and 1.8 million tons in September thinning domestic inventories, analysts said.

Trump administration divided over Iran war as Vance privately criticises Netanyahu: reports

Senior officials in US President Donald Trump’s administration have been divided for months over the war with Iran, with Vice President JD Vance privately criticising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and warning that the conflict could cost Republicans control of Congress, according to US media reports.

Vance privately accused Netanyahu of “being wrong on everything” regarding Iran and repeatedly urged Trump to negotiate an end to the conflict, Axios reported Thursday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

The vice president also warned that the war was deeply unpopular among American voters and could lead to Republican defeats in Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to the report.

Yemen’s Taiz province records over 5,000 illness cases as fighting displaces thousands

Authorities in Yemen’s southwestern Taiz province recorded 5,025 cases of illness in October that they linked to accumulating waste in Taiz city, where weeks of fighting have driven 6,400 families to seek refuge, Anadolu reports.

Taiz province’s Office for Siege Affairs said infectious and respiratory illnesses and fevers were among the cases recorded as waste piled up in streets, residential areas and drainage channels.

Ailan Abdel Haq, the province’s deputy governor for health affairs, accused the Houthi group Tuesday of turning back waste trucks before they could unload at a temporary landfill west of the city. Taiz has been unable to access its main landfill for more than 11 years. Abdel Haq urged UN agencies to intervene to get the trucks through and reopen the main site.

Bank of England set to raise rate as inflation jumps

The Bank of England is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate for the first time in more than three years as soaring energy costs push up global inflation.

The BoE is forecast to tighten borrowing costs by a quarter point to 4 per cent, finally catching up with the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank in tightening borrowing costs since the start of the Middle East conflict.

“Borrowers are braced for at least one rate hike” from the BoE this year as “consumer confidence has been jarred by the prospect of prices edging ever higher in the wake of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East”, noted Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell.

EDITORIAL: US voters have spoken on Iran in midterms. Will Washington listen?

The politics of toxicity and confrontation at home and abroad have led to a severe setback for American President Donald Trump. His Republican Party experienced a drubbing at Tuesday’s midterm polls, with the Democrats riding a decisive blue wave to power in both houses of the US Congress, and taking control of the American government’s legislative arm.

The Democrats managed wins in deeply red states, indicating the widespread dissatisfaction with Mr Trump’s style of governance. For most Americans, the unpopular war of choice with Iran and the cost-of-living crisis it has led to were reason enough to punish the Republicans at the ballot box. Mr Trump, referring to the electoral pummelling, admitted that “part of it was Iran”.

While domestically the economy and the Trump administration’s abrasive immigration policies are likely to dominate the agenda, the rest of the world would like to know if America will change course on the foreign front.

In his second term, Mr Trump has turned the old international order upside down, pushed around old allies, downplayed climate change, and talked of taking over other states’ territory.

His biggest foreign folly — in partnership with Israel — has been the war against Iran. Perhaps feeling the heat, just before the midterms, Mr Trump had announced he was ending a multibillion-dollar aid programme to Israel.

Trump says 'largely true' Iran war caused midterms loss, after Vance comments

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the Iran war was the key factor in his party’s sweeping midterm election losses, after Vice President JD Vance urged Republicans to be “honest” about the unpopular conflict’s impact, AFP reports.

Asked if he agreed with Vance’s remark that the way was “the reason we lost,” Trump, speaking to reporters at his White House ballroom construction site, says: “I think it’s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term. But at the same time, if I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again. Because long term, it’s the only answer. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”
