World congratulates Donald Trump for taking oath as US president
After US President Donald Trump took the oath of office on Monday, congratulatory messages flooded in from allied nations and other world leaders.
Pakistan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari both delivered statements congratulating US President Donald Trump on his inauguration.
Taking to X, PM Shehbaz wrote that he was looking forward to working with the 47th president “to strengthen the enduring Pakistan-US partnership.”
“Over the years, our two great countries have worked together closely to pursue peace and prosperity in the region and beyond for our peoples and we shall continue to do so in the future,” Shehbaz wrote.
Meanwhile, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported that in his message, President Zardari extended his best wishes to the new US president.
India
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his “dear friend” Trump in a message on X.
“I look forward to working closely together once again, to benefit both our countries, and to shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term ahead!”
The United Kingdom
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer uploaded a video message to X to congratulate the US president on his inauguration.
“For centuries, the relationship between our nations has been one of collaboration, cooperation and enduring partnership,” the British PM said. “It is a uniquely close one.”
Starmer added that the UK and the US will work together to “deliver for people on both sides of the Atlantic”.
“The special relationship between the UK and the US will continue to flourish for years to come,” Starmer concluded.
Germany
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on X, “Today, President Donald Trump takes office. Congratulations! The US is our closest ally and the aim of our policy is always a good transatlantic relationship. The EU, with 27 members and more than 400 million people, is a strong union.”
Israel
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu uploaded a video statement to X congratulating Trump on his inauguration.
“Congratulations President Trump! Sara and I send our warmest wishes to you, Melania and the American people on your second inauguration as President of the United States,” Netanyahu said, adding that Trump’s first term saw “groundbreaking moments in the history of the alliance” between the US and Israel.
“I believe that working together again, we will raise the US-Israel alliance to even greater heights,” the Israeli PM said.
Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Trump on his inauguration, saying he was looking forward to “active and mutually beneficial cooperation”.
“President Trump is always decisive, and the peace through strength policy he announced provides an opportunity to strengthen American leadership and achieve a long-term and just peace, which is the top priority,” Zelenskiy said on X.
Canada
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote in a post on X, “Congratulations, President Trump. Canada and the US have the world’s most successful economic partnership. We have the chance to work together again — to create more jobs and prosperity for both our nations.”
The European Union
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted a congratulatory message on X.
““The EU looks forward to working closely with you to tackle global challenges,” von der Leyen wrote. “Together, our societies can achieve greater prosperity and strengthen their common security. This is the enduring strength of the transatlantic partnership.”
Spain
In his congratulatory message on X, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said, “Congratulations Donald Trump on your inauguration as the 47th president of the United States.
“We look forward to working with the new US Administration to strengthen the strategic relationship between our countries and address common global challenges.”
Australia
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that the US is a great friend of Australia and their alliance has “never been stronger”.
“I look forward to working with you on the opportunities and challenges ahead,” he wrote on X.
