Oil rebounds on concerns about US-Iran peace deal, restoration of supply

Oil prices have rebounded on concerns about the lack of details in a preliminary agreement ending the war between the US and Iran and the realisation the resumption of supply through the key Strait of Hormuz may take longer than thought, according to Reuters.

Brent crude futures gained 26 cents, or 0.3 per cent, to $83.42 a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate rise to $81.12 a barrel, up 46 cents, or 0.3pc, as of 0108 GMT.

Top Senate Democrat demands US Congress be briefed on Iran deal

The most senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the US, Jeanne Shaheen, has called for lawmakers to be briefed immediately on the terms of the agreement President Donald Trump struck with Iran, AlJazeera reports.

“Congress must be immediately briefed on the terms of this agreement,” she said, adding that lawmakers would review any nuclear deal as required by law. Shaheen welcomed the turn towards diplomacy as “long overdue”, but said the war’s central goals had not been met.

“President Trump did not have a plan going into the conflict on how to end it,” she said, citing his “ever-shifting statements”. She said the country had emerged weaker, pointing to 14 service members killed and domestic inflation.

“There’s no question that America’s position is weaker now than at the beginning of the conflict,” she said.

Hezbollah says repelled Israeli force in south Lebanon

Hezbollah said it had repelled an Israeli force that was trying to “advance” in southern Lebanon, despite the US-Iran agreement to end the Middle East war on all fronts including in Lebanon, reports AFP.

Fighters from the group “using rockets and drones” blocked an Israeli force consisting of an excavator and two Merkava tanks that was “advancing” in the vicinity of Kfar Tebnit town near the southern city of Nabatieh, Hezbollah said in a statement.

Earlier today, an Israeli drone targeted a car in the same area “killing its driver”, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported, marking the first reported deadly strike since the agreement was announced.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has briefed Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri on the MoU’s clause on the cessation of hostilities against Lebanon, according to Al Jazeera.

Iran’s president says Tehran agreed to MoU to test US resolve to respect Iran’s rights
