US green card changes could put Iranians at risk, says congresswoman

US Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari has said the Trump administration’s announcement that applicants must leave the US to apply for permanent residency raises concerns for thousands of Iranians already in visa limbo, Al Jazeera reports.

The proposed changes mean that Iranians seeking Green Cards could be “forced to leave the country and process their case from abroad [even though] there is no US embassy in Iran”, the Democratic congresswoman said.

“Right now, more than 12,000 Iranian nationals who are here legally on student or work visas are already living in fear because of the Trump Administration’s [visa] processing pause,” Ansari said in a post on X.

US arms sales to Taiwan unrelated to Iran war, source says

US arms sales to Taiwan take years to process and are unrelated to the war with Iran, a source familiar with the matter said, after a senior US official suggested there was a pause due to the need to have enough arms for the conflict, according to Reuters.

Taiwan has been waiting for the US to approve an arms sale that could be worth up to $14 billion.

The source familiar with the matter noted that President Donald Trump has said he would decide on the Taiwan arms sales soon.

“These sales take years to process and are unrelated to Operation Epic Fury,” the source said, referring to the war the US and Israel launched in February.

“The United States Military has more than enough munitions, ammo, and stockpiles to serve all of President Trump’s strategic goals and beyond.”

France readies UN resolution on Hormuz as vote on US text stalls

France has drafted a UN Security Council resolution on setting up an international mission to restore movement in the Strait of Hormuz and could submit it if conditions are right, the foreign ministry says according to Reuters, as Washington struggles to bring to a vote a text Russia and China may say is biased against Tehran.

A US-Bahraini resolution on the strait has been under discussion for more than two weeks, with a vote repeatedly delayed as China and Russia signal they could veto it.

The US-Bahraini draft resolution demands Iran halt attacks and mining in the strait. China and Russia vetoed a similar US-backed text in April, arguing it was biased against Tehran.

Washington has secured almost 140 countries to co-sponsor its text in the hope of avoiding a veto, two European diplomats said. France, another veto-wielding power, has so far refused to back the US text.
