Virat Kohli scored a confident 49 to prop up India in a tricky chase as they defeated Pakistan by five wickets in a low-scoring Asia Cup match on Saturday.
India skittled Pakistan for 83 inside 18 overs before being put under the heat in the chase.
The reply from MS Dhoni's side began on a sorry note with fiery left-arm paceman Mohammad Amir dismissing both openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane leg before in the first over before they had opened their scoring.
Amir also dismissed Suresh Raina to finish with 4-18-3 and won some praise from Kohli along the way.
“It wasn't an easy wicket to bat, I wasn't happy with myself in the last game, where I went too hard at the ball. I made mistakes in the last innings but I dug in this time,” Kohli said of the seaming Sher-e-Bangla Stadium pitch.
“I would like to congratulate Mohammad Amir for the way he bowled, I actually congratulated him while he was bowling. I was really happy to play such an amazing spell of fast bowling. May god bless him with more success,” Kohli, who was named man of the match, added.
The Indian pacemen were right on the money as well after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni opted to bowl first on a green-tinged pitch. His bowlers responded brilliantly, extracting good movement out of the wicket.
Medium paceman Hardik Pandya was the most successful among the Indian bowlers, picking up three wickets for eight runs, while Pakistan did not help their own cause with Khurram Manzoor and captain Shahid Afridi running themselves out.
Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed's 25 was Pakistan's highest individual score while Manzoor, making his T20 debut, was the only other batsman to reach double figures with 10.

Kohli was clearly out LBW in Amir second over with the ball hitting the middle stump, but was declared not out, So was Rohit in the first ball of the match...would love to see Amir in test matches with no restrictions on the number of overs and the Empire referral system with Hawk eye. That would be something extra ordinary. Great spell Amir.

The match was already reduced to a contest between a fiery pace attack and a belligerent batting lineup - And Aamir along with Irfan, Sami and Wahab delivered on that by bowling their hearts out. Time and time again, we fall on the bowlers to bail out the blunders from the 'batsmen'.
I think the term Batsman in Pakistan has taken new meaning, now it just means a person who can wield a bat and but has no capability of using it.
The Pakistani players need mental resilience training, the way the Pakistani openers played and their body language, it seemed as if they had been psychologically defeated before even entering the field.
There a lot of factors that are wrong with Pakistan cricket, and this match was the spectacle where it all unraveled.

It is a wonderful gesture from one of the top batsman. Amir's performance was like watching Imran, Akram, Waqar or Shoib Akhter at their peak. Pakistani batting on foreign lands except Sharjah, Dobai has always struggled. Bowlers mentioned above while bowling in tandem were able to cover up our batsmen weaknesses. Unfortunately, there is no other Pakistani bowler who is even close to Amir and can support him like bowlers of yore.

That's the spirit Virat. He can be very passionate on ground while playing cricket but he is a fantastic human being at the end of the day. What a class player he is. He is someone who is perfect to inherit Dhoni's legacy after Dhoni retires. India has some exciting cricketers in the current lot, many of whom are captaincy material including Kohli, Rahane, Sharma and Ashwin and also in the pipeline like Sarfaraz Khan, Ricky Bhui, Rishabh Pant, Armaan Jaffer, Mahipal Lormor and Ishan Kishan. Team looks well settled and very strong. Batting and Fielding are exceptional. Bowling was a concern but has improved a lot with bowlers now hunting in packs.

Also our senior batsmen must be praising Aamir. But how Afridi and Shoaib Malik will rally team if they are clueless and confused while batting against mediocre Indian bowling. Malik ran the other batsman out then threw his own wicket. Afridi scored 2 runs and team he wanted to RALLY was out with almost five overs to go in T20 match. Early in his career when batting first Afridi used to open and put quick runs on the board to relieve pressure, I guess now he is afraid and have no planing how to play on particular wicket, pathetic!

When these pakistani players play enough times with each other, they still misread each other in runs between wickets and get run out. They do not seem to hold their cool when playing India and Rush to make runs for worry of not making them. If they go in knowing they will win, but need to keep a cool and clear head, they will win. They have the talent but not the cool.

Quite an impressive spell from Amir!
However pathetic batting from the Pakistani batsmen (I wouldn't say the same about Indian batsmen, it was the Pakistani bowlers who actually got the wickets). I hope the domestic circuit improves so that there are quality batsmen in the reserves.
We need Pakistan to become more competitive to challenge the likes of Australia and South Africa. India isn't able to produce quality bowlers.

Good game. After the Pakistan innings I was kinda disappointed, I thought this was going to be one-sided and boring. Amir made is really interesting. His spell was awesome. One thing we Indians are always jealous of Pakistan is its classic fast bowlers. They keep coming on to the stage time after time and era after era. From the days of Khan Mohammad to Safraz Nawaz to Imran to Wasim/Waqar to Shoaib Akhtar to Asif to Amir. It is incredible to see this raw talent. It is always a mystery to us regarding how Pakistan is able to generate such classic fast bowlers. Bowling fast is not good enough. Many can do that. But doing magic with the ball is a totally different phenomenon. Amir has simply erased the memory of his past with this stellar performance. I sincerely hope that he plays for many more years to enrich the game of cricket.

Except for Amir the rest of the Pakistan side showed no fight. The batting was a disaster. Boys you need to bat better if you want success against the best sides. Afridi correctly pointed out that his batsmen should have read the pitch and played more responsibly. The run outs hurt and the team in the end was found out. There are so many chinks in their batting armory.

Well said Kohli, that's why you have fan across the border... Amir bowled well in helpful conditions but let's face the fact the total was never going to trouble the bathing line up. In the game against Bangladesh we were 3 down and went on to score 166. Our bathing line up is capable of taking pressure... Moreover I don't think anybody had played this bowling attack (especially Amir) earlier. Some might have faced Wahab and Irfan, hence those two bowlers were not as effective as Amir and Sami...I am sure for the next game they will prepare well especially Rohit as he likes to get big score... I am also sure that if Pakistani batsmen can support their bowlers then they can easily reach finals... Hoping to see another good game..

Once upo a time I was a huge fan of afridi but the more he is playing the more i am getting out of this fandam! The failures in batting has many things to dp with him, he brought this inconsistancy and irresponsiblity into pak cricket! He should retire sooner better.

Amazing display of fast bowling by Mohammad Amir, But what a pity his efforts were in vain because of poor show of batting by Pakistan. It is absolutely unfair to Amir that he is not supported by his fellow batsmen. It seems there is a huge disparity between Pakistan batting and bowling. No matter how good your bowling attack is you have to have some runs on board for them to defend it. I would give credit to Kholi for his superb bating and also praising Amir for his bowling. Its about time for Shahid Afridi to say good bye to all formats of cricket.

My message to my few Indian fellows who did not like when their bowlers were not praised as compared to Amir. So my dear brothers bowlers could not be praised for bowling good against pathetic Pakistani batting line-up which has been struggling for years. If Indian bowlers would have bowled like this against any other top eight side then they definitely would have praised. Amir was praised because he performed against giant Indian batting. That is why Pak/Ind match is always about Pakistani bowlers versus Indian batting.
It is my true emotion from Pakistan.
On the top Ahmed Shahzad wants to make a comeback based on his ridiculous performances and Afridi does not want to retire nor Waqar. Are all these just out of their mind? Consistent failure and they just say few positives from this game and we will learn. Huh.

@Punekar True but sometimes stats do not tell the whole story. Pandya was good as well but Pakistani batsmen were trying to attack him and in the process got out as they were under pressure to setup a reasonable target. Whereas in Amir's case, all batsmen were out playing defensive shots and they were merely trying to survive the onslaught unleashed by the youngster. Thats why he is receiving more praise then Pandya despite the figures showing differently.

I am happy to see that Pakistani fans excited about Indo-Pak cricket match. Indian fans were also excited about the prospect of a clash of neighbours in cricket. But, India has moved on druing the last 10 years or so. In spite of whatever negatives connected with IPL, it has been responsible for raising the standards of cricket (at least for the shorter form of the game) and improving the cricket infrastructure (cricket stadiums, hotel facilities, etc). Now, Indian team selectors have a wide choice of players to choose from. The comparative weakness of Pakistan cricket team can be attributed to lack of exposure and resources. The security issues have forced Pakistan to choose neutral venues for all their matches. This is a serious constraint for nurturing talent. The cricket ecosystem like local talent pool, stadium do not get benefited. The Pakistan government must seriously consider ways of improving the security environment of the country so that foreign players don't get deterred in playing in Pakistan. Ideally PSL must take place in Pakistan. This is the only way Pakistan team can improve. We Indians would like to play with a Pakistan team that challenges India in all departments of the game. This a dream.

I was really impressed with Mohammed Amer's bowling. I always like to see good fast bowling which gives excitement. Best of luck Amer for how future and hopefully he would not be involved in any scandal.

I could catch the 2nd innings. This Aamir spell reminds me of Wahab Riyaz spell against Aussies in the wc last year. Pakistan were game had they scored around 30-40 runs more. It is well known that the bowling of Pakistan is probably the best in the world. Only they have to be properly used and the whole team has to play. Good Luck dude. U deserve all the glory.

The only positive out of this match was Indian Bowling, Kohli and Amir. Loved to see him Bowling.
I hope Indian Bowlers get to learn from him. He was there to prove himself, welcome Kid on the block and I hope you play in IPL

We need to fire the coach(batting, bowling and fielding) as we do not need coaching at all. Certainly our techniques have never ever improved by any sort of coaching. We need to hire a Psychiatrist instead to counsel our batsmen and teach them how to play under pressure.

@N.Sid : so was Kurram and soaib malik to Bumbra respectively, but it went against India. Kohli would have also remained not out if he was not given lbw, which clearly was not out as the ball had touched the bat before hitting the stumps. These things keep happening in a tense match.

Neither the pakistani batsmen are bad nor Md Amir & rest of the pakistani bowlers will continue to get like such wicket (fast surface) every where. Pakistan only need to learn to play in pressure & practice to remain calm

Amir bowled well but thats a seaming track, that too in 4th cover Kohli scored two 4s. Please don't compare him with Akram.
I am an Indian who always disliked great performance of Imran,Waqar,Akram against India but have great regards about their ability.

The end result is what counts. Has a bowler never taken two wickets in an over before? Rahane (with all due respect) isnt exactly wicket of the century is it? Whats the big hoo ha? Lets see Amirs appetite on flat tracks with the old ball. This habit of making every player the next best thing kind of gets to their heads. Kohli is a class apart and yes Amir is good, but to be a great he has a tall mountain to climb. On another note, good to see friendly banter between the two peoples, its like long lost cousins getting together over dinner. Much more similar than one can ever imagine. Peace.

Amir was totally awesome. An Akram in the making! If he had bowled two more overs he would have got India out for less than 80.
On a lighter note, now that Kohli has praised Amir, can Pakistan pardon the poor Kohli fan, who in a stupid show of appreciation, hoisted an Indian flag in Pakistan. One good deed deserves another, don't you think?

@Anas Funny thing is before the game Afridi said, we have no pressure and we would have batted if we won the toss. Kind of amateurish approach to hide their disadvantage. Dhoni meanwhile said ' there is always pressure before any international match and this is no different'. In my opinion the Pakistani batsmen tentativeness in running between the wickets kind of exposed their pressure and also lack of exposure. Also kind of surprised to see some fast bowler with tummy pooch. Indians looked lot fitter. As an Indian it was a good sight.

Once against Pakistan fans were reduced to scrounging for crumbs. Wahab against Watson, Amir against Kohli. Both matches thoroughly lost despite valiant, and ultimately futile, single efforts. All kudos to India for showing that professionalism and competence must prevail over flair and emotion.

This is why as a person regardless of my nationality, I am a huge fan of Virat Kohli. This battle b/w AAMIR and Virat reminded me of Sachin and Wasim. Two amazing competitors going at each other hard but at the same time have utmost respect for each others game. Just great sportsmanship!!

@N.Sid : I agree that Kohli survived a close LBW appeal, but even if there would have been REFERRAL system in place he would have been given Not Out. The ball was hitting the bails and in such cases according to the rules the decision stays with that of the on field umpires.

amir is good , but still not to the level of wasim akram.....
akram can both swing and seam , can square up a batsman and can also bowl 5 degree 10 degree angles....
being india still admire wasim and he was a once in generation bowler....
on current lot Mitchell starc still remains the best , amir , wahab, irfan , trent bolt will follow the suit

Guys....Kohli emerged as match winner....Indian bowers bowled equally or better compared to pakistani bowlers....gave away just 83 runs and only 75 or less off the bat.
It was not Indian batting but the bowling which won them the match

We all know that the ball-tracker clearly showed it hitting the top of the bails. Which means that even DRS would have saved Kohli.
