Millions under virus lockdown as China battles Delta outbreak

Millions of people were confined to their homes in China today as the country tried to contain its largest coronavirus outbreak in months including seven positive tests found in Wuhan, where the virus first emerged in late 2019, AFP reports.

China reported 55 new locally transmitted cases on Monday as an outbreak of the fast-spreading Delta variant reached over 20 cities in more than a dozen provinces.

Meanwhile, Beijing has blocked tourists from entering the capital during the peak summer holiday travel season. Only “essential travellers” with negative nucleic acid tests will be allowed to enter after the discovery of a handful of cases among residents who had returned from Zhangjiajie.

Top city officials on Sunday called for residents “not to leave Beijing unless necessary”.

Thailand steps up home isolation as virus cases strain hospitals

Thailand will increase the number of people required to isolate at home with Covid-19 to 100,000, health officials have said, as capacity in healthcare facilities dwindles amid a surge in cases driven by the Delta variant of the virus, Reuters reports.

“There are currently 60,000 patients in home isolation and we expect to expand that capacity to 100,000,” health official Natthapong Wongwiwat, told a news briefing.

Earlier in the pandemic, all Covid-19 patients in Thailand were admitted to hospitals, but last month authorities introduced home isolation for more than 30,000 people with minor or no symptoms for Bangkok and surrounding provinces.

The Southeast Asian country's coronavirus taskforce on Monday reported 17,970 new cases, bringing its total caseload to 633,284 infections, with 5,074 deaths.

Keep travel simple to reopen economy, Heathrow CEO tells Britain

The boss of London's Heathrow Airport has asked Britain to rebuild confidence in travel by making it easier to go abroad, as speculation grow that the government is poised to slap yet more new rules on arrivals, reports Reuters.

Britain has reopened its borders to large parts of the world, scrapping quarantine for fully vaccinated arrivals from the European Union and the US, in a boost for airlines and travel companies brought to their knees by the pandemic.

But just as families and business travellers arrived at airports like London's Heathrow, the industry faced a new headache over potential Covid-19 warnings against holidays to Spain.

Heathrow's chief executive has called on the government not to throw new barriers in the way of travel just as it finds its feet again.

“Let's just make it easier now for people to travel,” he told Reuters in the arrivals hall. “I think we just need to keep things simple. We need to build confidence in travel.”

Millions under virus lockdown as China battles Delta outbreak

Millions of people were confined to their homes in China as the country tried to contain its largest coronavirus outbreak in months with mass testing and travel curbs.

China reported 55 new locally transmitted coronavirus cases on Monday, as an outbreak of the fast-spreading Delta variant reached over 20 cities and more than a dozen provinces.

Local governments in major cities including Beijing have now tested millions of residents, while cordoning off residential compounds and placing close contacts under quarantine, AFP reports.

The central city of Zhuzhou in Hunan province ordered over 1.2 million residents to stay home under strict lockdown for the next three days as it rolls out a citywide testing and vaccination campaign, according to an official statement.

New Zealand to open one-way travel for workers from some Pacific nations

New Zealand will open up one-way quarantine-free travel for seasonal workers from Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu to address labour shortages in the horticulture industry, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said, according to Reuters.

The quarantine-free arrangement is expected to start from September, Ardern said at a news conference. It will only be available to workers who qualify under the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme, which allows the horticulture sector to recruit labour from overseas for seasonal work when there are not enough New Zealand workers.

The scheme was suspended after the country shut its borders last year due to Covid-19.

Ardern is expected to reveal more details next week about how the country will gradually reopen its borders.
