Pakistan ‘have underperformed’ says Salman Agha after T20 World Cup exit

A disappointed Salman Agha said his team had “underperformed” after they exited the T20 World Cup on Saturday, but held back from making an “emotional” decision on his future as Pakistan captain.

Pakistan were knocked out on net run rate despite beating Sri Lanka in their final Super Eights match in Kandy on Saturday.

“We have underperformed in the whole tournament,” Agha told reporters.

Over 20: Shaheen gets hit for hat-trick of sixes but pulls back just in time to save the match for Pakistan

Shaheen Afridi missed his length on the first delivery and was sliced for a four.

Shanaka dispatched the next delivery for a 97-metre six on the off side. The next ball was again struck for a six on the leg side, as Sri Lanka inched ever closer to the target.

The next delivery … wait for it … went for another six! A hat-trick of sixes by Sri Lankan skipper Shanaka.

He then decided to scoop it behind himself but missed it completely, resulting in a dot ball.

The last ball ended in a dot ball too, denying the Sri Lankans their dream finish over the final line.

Over 19: Shadab gets dispatched for two sixes; Shanaka gets half-century

Shadab started the over with a googly outside off stump, which was declared a wide. Shanaka then heaved the ball over long-off for a huge six off the second delivery after being given the strike.

He then pumped the ball, a wayward delivery towards the off side for a double.

A six off the fourth delivery got Shanaka his 50. He attempted another big shot off the fifth delivery but only managed a single.

A dot ball to end the over.

Over 18: Shaheen claims wicket of Rathnayake

Shaheen started the over with a yorker, but was played off the pads for a single.

Another good delivery, a yorker outside the off stump resulted in a dot ball.

Rathnayake tried to pump the third straight down the ground but ended up in an easy catch at long on, bringing an end to an otherwise brilliant innings by the Sri Lankan batsman.

Wellalage, the new man in, took a single to get off the mark, before Shanaka edged the fifth delivery between third and backward point for a four.

Shaheen ended the over with a yorker.

Over 17: Naseem Shah dispatched for six off first delivery

Naseem Shah was struck for a six off the first delivery by skipper Shanaka. He dropped the next ball short and only conceded a single.

Rathnayake tried to scoop the third delivery over the head and was almost caught by Zaman, who lost the ball as he fell to the ground after a diving effort.

A yorker on the last delivery conceded only a single.

Over 16: Usman Tariq proves expensive again as Pakistan’s World Cup dream ends

Usman Tariq was dispatched for a six off the first delivery, before a double on the second.

The third ball was hit straight down the ground but didn’t manage to go the distance and dropped just short of the fielder on long-off. Shanaka managed to get a double.

Pakistan are now out of the T20I World Cup.

A double to end the over.

Over 15: Shadab comes into the attack, gets hit for two sixes

Shadab Khan came into the attack and conceded singles off the first three deliveries.

The fourth delivery was hit high into the air towards the leg side by Rathnayake, with the bail sailing over the fielder’s head for a six.

The last delivery was again struck for a six by Rathnayake.

Over 14: Nawaz concedes a four and a six

Nawaz started the over by conceding single off the first delivery, which brought Shanaka on strike. He too took a single off the second delivery, despite coming out of the crease looking for a big shot.

The third delivery was dropped short but Rathnayake only managed a single. Shanaka then struck the fourth ball for a six on the leg side.

Nawaz recovered quickly, bowling a good delivery and conceding only a single. He then flighted the last ball and was hit for a boundary.

Over 12: Nawaz into the attack; bowls Liyanage on last delivery

Nawaz started the over with a dot before conceding a single off the next.

He was unlucky on the third delivery, which the batsman managed to edge fine, beating the keeper and racing to the boundary.

100 up for Sri Lanka with a single off the fourth delivery.

He managed to raise Pakistan’s hopes with a peach of a delivery on the last ball which beat the batsman, Janith Liyanage, and crashed into the stumps.

Sri Lanka are now down 5 wickets.

Over 11: Abrar takes down Mendis, but celebration muted as NRR pressure piles on

Abrar returned for the 11th, conceding singles on the first couple of deliveries before being slammed behind square by Rathnayake for a lofty six.

The fourth was batted to long-on by Rathnayake for another single.

Kamindu Mendis defended the fifth to the bowler, before being bowled by a peach of a delivery on the last ball of the over.

Sri Lanka now at 94/4.

Over 10: Usman Tariq struggles to find rhythm

Usman Tariq started the over with a wide down the leg side, followed by singles off the next four legitimate deliveries.

The fifth delivery was a bad line by Tariq who was struck for a four through a sweep shot.

The over ended with a single.

Over 9: Abrar claims wicket of danger man Asalanka

Abrar continued his spell, almost managing to get Asalanka’s wicket off the second delivery with a great diving attempt by Nafay in the ring.

Rathnayake then slogged the third delivery for a four and then ran a quick single to rotate the strike to Asalanka.

The breakthrough finally came on the fifth delivery as Asalanka attempted to slog it on the leg side again but missed the ball and it crashed into the stumps.

Pakistan got excited on the very next ball with a huge shout for LBW that was given by the umpire but overturned on review.

Over 7: Abrar hunts for his second wicket

Abrar bowled a wide off the second delivery as he attempted to stay our of the batsman’s arc.

Asalanka and Rathnayake rotated the strike for the next four deliveries, before the latter attempted a slog sweep towards the leg side but an excellent fielding effort by Nafay in the deep saved a sure boundary.

Over 6: Sri Lanka look strong at end of powerplay despite loss of two wickets

Naseem continued his spell, conceding a single off the first delivery and then was dispatched for a four off the next.

A mis-field at cover ended up costing Pakistan another runout chance. The next ball was a dot again.

At least 50% of Naseem Shah’s deliveries have been slow balls in this spell.

An excellent yorker worried the batsman on the fifth delivery.

Sri Lanka, however, had other plans as Asalanka lifted the last delivery for a six on the leg side.

Over 5: Abrar into the attack, claims wicket of danger man Mishara

Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed came into the attack and claimed the wicket of Mishara, who was looking very good, on the first delivery.

The next two balls were dots as the new man in, Pavan Rathnayake, attempted to take stock of the situation.

He got a double off the fourth delivery and then rotated the strike on the fifth.

A missed run out chance on the last delivery.

The second legitimate ball went for a single, bringing Mishara back on strike.

He struck a glorious shot towards cover off the third delivery.

A swing and miss off a slow delivery on the fifth ball that went over the middle stump.

Shaheen started the over with a dot ball, hitting Mishara on the pads but going down the leg side.

He was dispatched for a six straight down the ground off the next delivery.

Mishara then struck the next ball for a four on the off side.

He struck another four off the second-last ball, cutting it towards the off side.

The over ended with a single.

Over 2: Naseem Shah draws first blood with wicket of danger man Nissanka

Naseem Shah came into the attack for his first over of the tournament. His first delivery went straight to the fielder, followed by a slow delivery towards the leg side which was called a wide.

The second legitimate delivery was hit straight up in the air by Nissanka but landed safely and was picked off the ropes by Shaheen.

The third delivery was again a slower delivery towards the off side, with Nissanka only managing to hit it with the toe end of the bat and ending up giving an easy catch to Nawaz in the ring.

Charith Asalanka is the new man in. He blocked the first delivery, before taking a single off the next.

The last ball ended with a single.

Over 1: Shaheen Afridi concedes 5 runs in the over

Danger man Pathum Nissanka faced Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, dotting the first two deliveries before trying to heave the third towards the leg side and missing it completely.

Nissanka managed a single off the fourth to get off the mark.

Kamil Mishara dotted the first delivery before getting a thick outside edge to end the over with a boundary.

Over 20: Wickets keep falling for Pakistan as they fail to keep up momentum

Pakistan continued with their string of losing wickets, with Sahibzada Farhan the latest to depart as he tried to hit the ball towards the off-side and ended up being caught inside the ring.

The next ball was faced by Shaheen Afridi, who played a high full toss towards the leg side and ended up being edged towards the boundary. The delivery was marginally declared fair by the third umpire upon review.

He was declared out on the next ball via LBW.

Naseem, the next man in, hit the ball towards the off side for a single.

A mix-up between Naseem and Usman after a fumble in the cost the former his wicket as he was run out on the non-striker’s end as he attempted to run a third.

A double off the last delivery to end the innings at 212-8.

Over 19: Sahibzada gets a ton; Nawaz, skipper Salman Ali Agha out for duck

Sahibzada knocked the first ball for a single to get to his second century of the tournament. This one came at a strike rate of 169.

Nawaz, the new man in, played the ball straight to the fielder and was caught inside the ring.

Skipper Agha Salman missed the first delivery and then hit the ball straight into the air for an easy catch inside the ring.

The next man in, Usman Khan, drew a thick outside edge off the top of the bat and the ball raced towards the boundary over the keeper’s head.

He missed the last ball.

Over 18: Shadab run out on last delivery after plenty of runs in the over

Dushmantha Chameera came back into the attack and almost claimed the wicket of Shadab Khan off the first delivery, but the ball had pitched outside the leg stump so was denied the LBW review.

Shadab then struck the second delivery for a four towards the off side.

A yorker on the third delivery was guided by Shadab towards the leg side for a single. Chameera then bowled a wide towards the off side to welcome Sahibzada to the strike.

A full toss to Sahibzada got dispatched for a four towards long-off, with mid-off up in the circle.

He then tried to get a double to get to his 100 but could only manage a single.

Shadab then struck the ball towards the square leg boundary and was stopped in the deep. The batsmen tried to sneak in a double but Shadab was run out on the striker’s end.
