Breathe Pakistan: A cleaner tomorrow, one step at a time
The air we breathe, the water we drink and the environment we call home—everything around us is changing. Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword; it’s a responsibility that businesses in Pakistan are taking seriously. Among them, Murree Brewery is stepping up, embracing green practices to leave a cleaner footprint on the planet.
Water is life, yet we’re facing a growing shortage of it. Recognising this, Murree Brewery launched the Pasteurizer Water Treatment Project in 2024, a game-changer in water conservation. By extending the lifespan of pasteurizer water from 15 to 81 days, the initiative has saved over 118,000 litres of water per unit—a small change in process but a giant leap in impact.
Switching to renewable energy is another key focus. In August 2024, Murree Brewery installed a 120KW solar energy system, generating 166,440 units of electricity annually. This shift not only helps cut down 150 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions but also reduces reliance on coal, making the air we breathe a little cleaner.
The philosophy of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle is deeply embedded in Murree Brewery’s operations. With an 80 per cent recycling rate, the company ensures that glass bottles, aluminum cans, PET plastics, cardboard, metal scrap, yeast sludge and paper don’t end up as waste.
Even brewing leftovers get a second life; spent grain is repurposed as nutritious cattle feed, and cullet glass finds its way to recycling plants. Plastic bottles are shredded and transformed into reusable pellets, proving that waste isn’t really waste - it’s an opportunity.
Real change happens when sustainability becomes a shared mission. That’s why Murree Brewery isn’t just making operational changes; it’s sparking conversations through environmental awareness programs, sustainability walks and training sessions. By partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and climate change department, they’re staying ahead of evolving eco-standards and inspiring others to do the same.
Pakistan’s environmental challenges are vast, but every step counts. Companies like Murree Brewery are showing that small, consistent efforts, whether through water conservation, clean energy or waste management; add up to a lasting impact.
The journey towards sustainability isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. And when businesses, communities and individuals come together, a cleaner, greener Pakistan isn’t just a dream; it’s a future within reach.
