Thank you PML-N for your efforts to make Karachi a peaceful and prosperous city. You might not be able to get votes from the city due to ethnic politics, but you will be respected throughout country for showing the courage.
Aug 21, 2015 02:45pm
Good effort and showing clear picture of what was happening in Karachi under PPP rule. Dont run away to Dubai and live here and face the music. In the maps given above, the most important character was that of Uzair Baloch, Baba Ladla and their well wishers in the Sindh assembly and those benefited and purchased studio flats in Dubai. I can prepare a similar sheet, showing the rise of property value in Clifton, defence , dubai, and the details of persons who could afford to purchase.
Aug 21, 2015 02:50pm
Eye opening ... now translate that in to financial losses incurred to the people for the readers. How many billions are terrorist organisations making from such crimes?
Aug 21, 2015 02:50pm
Thnx to Rangers, Karachi is slowly coming back to life.
Aug 21, 2015 02:51pm
Simply one line: "Where there is a will, there is a way"
Aug 21, 2015 02:52pm
Alhamdolillah. Great work by law enforcing agencies. We are especially indebted to the people who are working under cover to bust these gangs and making inroads into the criminal organizations.
Aug 21, 2015 02:55pm
Good progress so far by the LEA, it can get better if the existing Karachi operation still prevails for infinite period of time
Aug 21, 2015 02:56pm
In other words the operation is somewhat successful
Aug 21, 2015 02:56pm
The least number of killings took place from 1999, the year Pervez Musharraf took office, as the first chart shows. This speaks a lot about various governments in office before and after him.
Aug 21, 2015 02:57pm
Let's bring it down to zero
Aug 21, 2015 02:58pm
The figures show significant reduction in crimes. MQM should appreciate it.
Aug 21, 2015 03:03pm
1999 to 2007 were the real beautiful days in Karachi. thank you Dawn for presenting the quantitative analysis.
Aug 21, 2015 03:03pm
Not amazed by the increased crime during PPP rule. Musharraf era was best for Karachi.
Aug 21, 2015 03:05pm
Thanks to Zardari for the 2007 to 2013 trend.
Sohaib Rabbani Khan
Aug 21, 2015 03:06pm
The trend shows two things with clarity: 1. During the era of PPP, crime prospered in general. 2. During 2014-15, it appears that Rangers have done a good job for Karachi. Among other observations I feel that MQM should change its policy and become a true political party rather than rule Karachi militantly.
Aug 21, 2015 03:06pm
...and yet only MQM supporters remain in denial and claim crime has remained the same whilst not only statistics prove otherwise but people in the streets of Karachi are happier coming out after midnight and eating out which was not possible before the rangers operation.
Aug 21, 2015 03:11pm
if you say the operation is targeted ... you have the answer above ... thank you dawn.
Aug 21, 2015 03:14pm
The graphs show the lawlessness was at it' peak during Zardari's PPP (mis)rule!
Aug 21, 2015 03:17pm
Before seeing this graph I was of the opinion that the crime and other things has decreased in the metropolis. But considering the values to be just for first six months of 2015 I don't think much has changed. Probabilistically speaking, if we just simply double the values for each crime done in 2015, it can be noticed that the conditions are not 'considerably' improved, as paraded by the political and military leadership. Having said that killings have been decreased no doubt and political and military leadership should be credited for that. But other than that there is still lot more to be done. In order to be sure this is a governed city not an amusement park, where anything can happen without any accountability of any sort. All the crimes above can be controlled easily, in my opinion. All 'militant-wings' of political parties should be cleansed and apprehended, not just of MQM. Every criminal has a political backing, in our city, in my understanding.
Aug 21, 2015 03:31pm
@AsR Dude, PML-N has nothing to do with this operation ! Had they a choice, there would be no zarb-e-Azb and no Karachi operation. You can thank Army for the change for better in both areas !
Aug 21, 2015 03:33pm
Nation should b thankful to General Raheel for his commitnent with security and not with politics
Aug 21, 2015 03:34pm
Nice graphical presentation Dawn. One of the things which is seems that we still lack is the use of technology. No doubt on Rangers efforts but our cyber crime bill and IT Ministry is still lagging the drum to be made on these thefts. An example of recent incident with Wasim Akram in which Car has wrong number plate is a big concern. Mobile snatching is mostly very common crime but still we see to curb that, the efforts are less. Why still the snatch mobile are still present in Electronic market and other areas. Why they are still easy to sold in black market. One raid of Rangers make so much noise from market mafia that they protest the raid on roads give difficulty to normal citizen and next day ask Rangers that to curb crime. Much to right. Simply make the correct rules implemented. Rangers Zindabad.
Aug 21, 2015 03:35pm
From 1999 to 2003, there was so much peace in Karachi, hats off to Mr.Musharaf.
Aug 21, 2015 03:38pm
Some of these charts should be in percentage form to show context. Next time use a statistician to compile...
Aug 21, 2015 03:39pm
Good commendable work by Rangers: however, the stats for 2015 are only for 7 months. so I guess the comparisons are not exact.
Aug 21, 2015 03:43pm
@WhatWhat Where was the army during Zardari rule? Give credit where its due... Its a joint effort of the LEAs and PML government.
Aug 21, 2015 03:43pm
So data supports what Karachiites already know. Rangers operation has done barely anything to curb cellphone snatching. And these numbers are heavily under reported since the majority doesn't even bother to report it to the police.
Aug 21, 2015 03:49pm
Great effort by Gen Raheel Sharif s visionary team. Peace in karachi means prosperity in country. It was Musharrafs biggest mistake to work with Criminal elements
Aug 21, 2015 03:49pm
@AsR So you think its PML-N who is behind the operation.........
Aug 21, 2015 03:49pm
The date witnessed that the Era of Musharraf & MQM between 2002 to 2007 was great, without the engagement of local Karachites its not sustainable.. Local bodies & local Police sysem is the key to any success, one has to accept the fact.
Aug 21, 2015 03:50pm
Not as much reduction as claimed by govt and rangers. Remember this is only half of the years data. I fear if rates are still up while the operation is going on it may not get worse afterwards.
Aug 21, 2015 03:51pm
Wow. look at the era of Pervaiz Musharraf. The record speaks itself the prosperous Karachi under city government of Mustafa Kamal, supported fully by his party and people of Karachi. This is the proof that how well Musharraf sahab handled Karachi and the people of Karachi, that was the only era when the elected people have got some space to work for the prosperity of their city and people. Still missing those quality days. Nawaz regime Should learn something from this analysis.
Aug 21, 2015 03:52pm
well now clearly everyone sees about what karachi is before Rangers are not active, now rangers is active every where in karachi make peaceful karachi & all extortion & crime is as compare to before 2015 there is very low. Good work Rangers
Aug 21, 2015 03:59pm
It is visible that when MQM was in power there were least killings and other crimes. They not only managed law and order situation well but also changed the map of this city. PPP's was the worst time the city has witnessed. I remember i visited Karachi right after some weeks of PPP's government formation and i saw all the under process construction under Mustafa Kamal was brought to halt and the city was left as orphan. And yet saeen says "hum ne karachi me recard taraqqiati kam karaye hain"
Aug 21, 2015 04:01pm
@Usher ... The Great era of Musharraf & MQM .. Karachi needs local representation.
Aug 21, 2015 04:02pm
A city under siege either from criminals or security agencies does not guarantee sustainable peace
Aug 21, 2015 04:05pm
Abdul Aziz, everyone knows PMLN was more interested in appeasing and negotiating with militants in Karachi and rest of Pakistan. It is Raheel Sharif who brought the good change in both military and civil establishment's mindset.
Aug 21, 2015 04:09pm
Thank you Rangers and Pakistan Army....We love you by heart
Aug 21, 2015 04:14pm
@WhatWhat How can you state that PMLN have nothing to do with this Operation. Kindly keep in mind that Army chief is subordinate and answerable to the Prime Minister. According to the constitution Prime minister is the real commander in chief. Only blind followers of martial law can state such statements.
Aug 21, 2015 04:23pm
@Uzair Azam Brother ! Please look at the analysis again with open eyes your comment is totally contradicting the results shown. Musharraf Era was consistently best. I don't doubt over general Sharif's capabilities and fully support his actions against terrorism in country but he has to reconsider his policies again for Karachi. Just a little more focus to target banned outfits will definitely increase his credibility who are still roaming freely in the city.
Aug 21, 2015 04:25pm
Zulfiqar Mirza - Interior Minister 2008 - 2011 The establishment of Amn Committe. Results 2013 - 2014.
Aug 21, 2015 04:30pm
PML-N working for Khi peace but Musharraf was the Best....
Aug 21, 2015 04:39pm
Care to show similar charts for other regions too? Especially Punjab?
Aug 21, 2015 04:53pm
We are the best and should ensure that we maintain our standards.
Aug 21, 2015 05:01pm
No doubt Musharraf was a great leader. His tenure saw a very peaceful Karachi, as evidenced by the first chart. People of Karachi are educated and peaceful people. Most of the crime is from the people of Lyari and we all know what kind of people they are and which political party they are attached to.
Aug 21, 2015 05:14pm
Karachi was most peaceful than today during 1999 till 2006 it clear from 1st graph so at that time policy was much better.... its a truth
Aug 21, 2015 05:29pm
It's good surgery but also do something for consistent health of Karachi mean corruption less departments special All LEA so the situation will not recur.
Aug 21, 2015 05:29pm
@AsR : Everyone knows who has the courage to enforce Karachi operation. Certainly Nawaz league do not have spine to take even half of the effort required. Well done Pakistan Armed Forces
Aug 21, 2015 05:43pm
Some people think during general there was peace and Democratic era cause more chaotic . But dictators gave number to press and during democracy when someone die of heart attack it is Zardari mistake. Karachi is always same and worst time was during Zia and according to record it was most peaceful era.
Aug 21, 2015 05:44pm
Mobile & Car theft has not seen much improvement, all thanks to corrupt & politicized police in Karachi.
Aug 21, 2015 06:17pm
@Harmony-1 Please see the data one more time. 1999-2007 was the best time for Karachi and MQM was also there. Only difference was Musharraf govt. accepted the elected power of Karachi and gave them full support. You can ask anyone most development happened in Karachi during that time. Starting from PPP govt. Karachi became the mess and all blame is on MQM. No one is questioning the rulers of that time. People of Karachi have seen NS govt twice in the past and he gave nothing to this city except yellow cabs. You can see how slowly development projects are going in Karachi. This is all political. Why Karachi is not getting it's fair attention? BTW I am not an MQM fan. Just trying to think out of the box. Please be rationale and don't paint just black and white.
Aug 21, 2015 06:20pm
It clearly shows that while MQM was ruling Karachi in Musharaf days, things were far better. It is the dirty politics played by PPP which led to steep rise in killings and other crimes.
Aug 21, 2015 06:33pm
WOW, a 99.7% success rate for solving kidnapping cases!!! Knowing how competent our police force is, there are two possible explanations for this: 1. 'Case closed' for any reason (victim recovered alive or dead, or no progress being made) is counted as 'case solved'. OR 2. The police are in on the kidnapping and help 'solve' the case after the ransom is paid.
Aug 21, 2015 06:42pm
Fruits of democracy! Seems like Musharraf did a better job during his years in comparison to the so called democracy we have now!
Aug 21, 2015 07:09pm
The killings chart says it all - Musharraf era (1999-2007) the killings were under control. Also 2013 is a year with the most crimes - most killings, most snatching. It was the last year of the PPP government and under their patronage the lyari gangsters must have gotten a free hand to get as much as possible since they might not have gotten the same freedom.
Aug 21, 2015 07:39pm
lot of progress made PLEASE continue the effort and do not stop perusing criminals, terrorists, extremists. Economy and welfare of citizens of city depend on safe and peaceful environment.
Aug 21, 2015 07:46pm
The charts show that during the time MQM had real power in the city during Mustafa Kamal's time as Mayor, the crime rate in Karachi was very very low. The rate shot up starting with the so called democracy. I request my fellow citizens to analyse the charts for the good times and for the times when things started going bad. MQM bashing will get us no where. In fact it can worsen the ethnic divide. Which is bad not only for Karachi but the whole country.
Aug 21, 2015 07:50pm
@all-is-equal - Rationality also demands we appreciate rangers' efforts as results speak for themselves. The good governance done in the period you mention was due to Mutafa Kamal but what has been done to him shows the true motives of the party he belonged to.
Aug 21, 2015 07:53pm
Can I get the data?
Aug 21, 2015 08:02pm
Not PML-N . Army & Ranger did it
Aug 21, 2015 08:23pm
@AsR Last I checked Rangers were part of the Army! This has nothing to do with PMLN. You just have to look at the numbers of 2014 before the Army operation began. It is the Army that is behind the reduction in crime in Karachi.
Aug 21, 2015 08:52pm
The graph will indicate two areas where we see least crime.. Gen. Musharraf's rule and currently Rangers operations. Strange eh? Democracy anyone?
Aug 21, 2015 09:41pm
NS and his team should have worked out with MQM, for the development of Karachi and law and order sitiuation, for better results like Gen. Mushraf did. Rangers is a timely solution. Watch time will tell.
Aug 21, 2015 09:43pm
Is it a mere coincidence that the crimes have dramatically dropped since the start of the operation? Although MQM claims its targeted against their workers but nevertheless it looks quite effective from these figures regardless of who the criminals are!
Aug 21, 2015 09:57pm
Bravo rangers for de-criminalizing Karachi!
Aug 21, 2015 10:13pm
Most car snatched are on Jumma/Friday. Keep one eye on your car and the other on ur prayer :)
Aug 21, 2015 10:22pm
@Salih I'm not a pml n supporter but nawaz pushing this thing to its limit.good job too.
Aug 21, 2015 11:10pm
the main criminals involved in car snatching, kidnapping for ransom.form interior sindh, and other parts of the country, criminals like Uzair Baloch ,Magsi were allowed to escape before operation
Aug 21, 2015 11:33pm
By the way for those who are wondering why these incidents were down in Musharaf era , Musharaf gave full financial support to MQM and that is why they didnt need to do all this stuff as their funds were coming in.
Aug 22, 2015 12:08am
Thank you Dawn...from 2002 to 2007 MQM Waseem Akthar and from 2008 t0 2007 were minister of interior Sindh..
Aug 22, 2015 12:19am
@IMRAN ALI correction 2008 to 2011 Zulfikhar Mirza was interior minister
Aug 22, 2015 01:52am
These graphs help give some perspective of whats actually happening in real terms and trends. What I would like to know is how exactly were these figures collected? Also if we can see a summary of different policies that were implemented over the years to battle crimes and the affects it had. That would be something really helpful for both citizens and law enforcement agencies.
Aug 22, 2015 02:46am
If you look at line chart; one would see the spike in May; out of curiosity and my training at Sindh Universty; my professor in his first class asked us "tell me three things about STATS" none of us answered correctly; he replied "Statistics is a Lie, a Lie, a Lie". Going back to data point for May the spike was because 43 Ismailis were killed in a bus attacked by terrorist, now subtract this number you will see a straight line. At least crimes for the month of May cannot be attributed to MQM as some of folks are bragging in comments. Streets of Karachi are safer you bet they are ask the families of 4 police officers shot dead and the attack on MQM leader; and the loss of his driver.
Aug 22, 2015 02:49am
The graphical representation gives a clear picture of a spoiled shape of our democratic govt. The politician have failed in the past and they are repeating the same. Let us appreciate our LEAs who have really turned the tables for the locals. At the same time their sacrifices must not be forgotten because they are risking their lives for a few thousand rupees. Yet there are people out there who thinks that it is their job, no amount is sufficient when it comes to your life.
Gibran A. Hussain
Aug 22, 2015 03:24am
2015 figures reflect results only for 7 months. If these are prorated, the results for snatching of mobiles and vehicles are similar to 2013 and 2014.
Aug 22, 2015 03:52am
I wonder what was going on between 2007 and 2013. Hmm...now only if I can put my finger on something that would give me a clear idea of what was happening.
Aug 22, 2015 04:06am
Hard work by rangers shows the results very impressive. Thanks a lot for your love for Pakistan.
Aug 22, 2015 04:52am
The charts clearly shows how great of a messiah Pres. Gen Musharraf had been for inhabitants of Karachi in all 68 years history. As a Karachiite I'll forever be indebted to him for what he did for the city. I would also like to encourage all Karachiites to stimulate efforts to bring him back into political fold or else otherwise we'll always be leached and burglarized at the hands of Sharifs and Zardaris of this country, and our beloved city as it had been for better parts of history will be left bruised and battled.
Aug 22, 2015 09:54am
Operation going successfully against criminals and people are satisfied with it . The mess created by criminal groups supported by linguist pore group cannot be wiped out at once . The efforts of law enforcement agencies are appreciating .
Aug 22, 2015 01:44pm
Bravo Gen. Raheel Shareef!
Aug 23, 2015 02:04pm
@AsR With due respect bro !if it was entirely on the choice /power of PML-N , then This cleanup could have never happened ! It's just now the state (not the government ) has decided to clean this mess. I have been part of the meetings so I know.
