Kohli fined for showing dissent at umpire's decision

India’s Virat Kohli has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during his side’s Asia Cup T20 match against Pakistan in Dhaka on Saturday.
The player was found to have breached Article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match”.
The incident happened in the 15th over of India’s innings when Kohli, after being given out leg before, displayed dissent by first showing his bat and then leaving the crease while looking back at the umpire and uttering some words that were contrary to the spirit of the game.
On Sunday, Kohli admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Jeff Crowe of the Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. As such, there was no need for a formal hearing.
The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ruchira Palliyaguruge and Sharfuddoula, third umpire Enamul Haque and fourth official Anisur Rahman.
For all first offences, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee. — ICC

This penal action against the player aside, the umpiring in yesterday's match was largely sub-standard. Not one but FOUR major decisions which in international level are expected to be normal, went wrong. That in a total of 33 overs bowled. There were so many no balls Pakistan bowled that just went un-noticed. This specific one on Virat which even the boundary fielder would've heard was easily bat&pad. ICC should have smart umpires rather than expecting world class players to blindly honoring sub-standard umpires.

Mr Kohli also used abusive language in Urdu/Hindi when a Pakistani batsman was not given caught behind..........although umpiring was poor but this is no way to react.....he should have been banned for a game or two at least....

@PHILOSOPHER (FROM JAPAN) Kohlis fiery attitude shows he cares about performing. I honestly don't think theres anything wrong with that. Its quite a good characteristic to have in sports and is the reason why he is liked. Lets not forget he backs up it up with his bat emphatically, thats the main thing. Ive been watching his batting, and it is quite tough to get him out, very compact player, only way you can beat him is zip and swing and pepper him with bouncers.

I think it was not so harsh to looked on TV. And, i witnessed there were so many incidents like kohli did yesterday has happened. Just smiling on face, not argued or scolded the umpire. By the way, He accepted what charged with him. Sign of great player.

All those questioning Kohli's behavior/attitude request them to observe their team play against Australia in Australia and if your team manages to give them a fight then observe their behavior..even during recent Aus vs. NZ there were many issues...
Kohli has no problems with attitude he's very emotional; that's it...attitude is what defines a man and his success at all levels confirms that he carry right attitude...he can't control his emotions though and if someone has problems with that then deal with it...

Once again ICC targets a subcontinental player when the umpire was clear in the wrong & Virat's dissent was more in the nature of a smile at incompetent umpiring. Not only was there an edge, the ball would barely have hit the top of the stumps. A few days ago, we had the sight of Australian players - Hazelwood & Captain Smith - questioning the umpire when the decision was correct & using abusive language. They were fined far less than what Kohli was fined. ICC's racial bias is destroying the game.

For me, Dravid was the real aggressive one...he is expressed his aggression by virtue of determination in his eyes.... what Kohls and other modern players do is just theatrics.... keep the dignity of the game...don't bring it down to cheap slugfest...

We are not "justifying" a breach of conduct.... at least, I am not Of course there was a breach.
But it's so minor that it's not really meaty enough to get all tangled up in knots. All Kohli did was to smile for crying out loud, and maybe on his way out, tell the umpire he nicked the ball.
By the way, either Akash Chopra or Ajit Agarkar (I forget who) made an interesting observation on TV the other day. That because of DRS, the umpires are forgetting the art of taking a decision. So when there is no DRS, as is the case in T20s, tey often get caught out.

He should have taken it gracefully. Its a game of chance. Like he was LBW and survived it luckily when india was at 9 owing to misjudgment of the umpire.
Though he is the worlds' best batsman, needless to say.

However, what fines are imposed on umpires who give shoddy and substandard decisions? ... a cricketer's career could be finished on the basis of a decision of an umpire, but umpires career does not end. There has to be a level playing field for all.

Kohli should be banned for 3 matches that would put him out of Asia cup. This type of behavior cannot be accepted. I remember in IPL, Mumbai spectators harass him a lot every time he is on field.

Did you even see the Kohli's response once the Umpire's decision was made? A sheepish grin and one point to the racket - most white players would be let off for a lot more. Maybe you should look closer home - Wahab Riaz during the PSL - now that's probably good, aggressive attitude for ya.

May be ICC should spend the fine collected to check the umpires hearing. I am from India and do not support Kohli's dissent. Having said that, it was bat/pad and Kohli deserved a half century. He came in during testing times and Amir was deadly during that spell and remainded me of my favourite bowler, Akram.

I don't understand why they do not have DRS IN T20's. How can it delay the game if you limit it to just one decision per team. It is absolutely ridiculous not to have it. If India thinks it is not perfect so are umpire's. Let's not have them too.

I think a player should only be fined if the decision is correct and they showed dissent.
If the umpire makes a disastrous decision (mistake) then he has basically robbed a player from performing which happens to be his daily bread. How is player reprimanded but not the umpire for his bad decision.

it is necessary that players have right to ask third empire's version of the referees decision to avoid disappointment caused by the player when he feels he is given out wrongly.
