Most of us well-heeled ones don’t go and brush shoulders with the teeming masses on the Seaview beach or with those living and working in the “service sectors” of Defence and Clifton like Gizri Bazaar and Neelum Colony. But if we do take some time to linger there and watch the bustling life there is much decency, humanity and simple joys that can enrich the life of even a cynical observer.

I was walking back from the Seaview beach just after sunset when I noticed a figure dressed in tatters sitting on a heap of garbage. From a distance it appeared to be a woman.

When I came close it turned out to be a young man who was singing a love song in a soft melodious voice.  The singing was meant just for himself. I wanted to talk to him but then I stopped.  I felt I would be imposing on him exactly what he had escaped from.

The empty cart next to a very humble dwelling consisting of a few blocks of stones, a cloth roof, and a pair of chappals seemed like the sum total of the life of the resident of the “house”. Could life be made any simpler?

Abdul Ghafoor, the owner of a stall on the Seaview beach went and offered a burger to a “Malang”.  When I remarked to the giver that he was generous, he just smiled and said, “But that is our duty”.

They work silently, oblivious to the crowds gawking at them. Their movements are fluid and perfectly synchronised. These fishermen are in harmony among themselves and with nature.

Children have the amazing capacity to find happiness, mystery and adventure in any circumstance. These pictures of children on the beach and some living in the humble Neelum Colony show that there could be much joy in adversity.
