While social media platforms offer instant access to anything and anyone in the world, they can also result in an information overload. It is important to consume media in healthy doses and English actor Tom Holland intends to do just that.

The Spiderman actor shared a video on Sunday revealing that he has been staying away from the platforms. “Hello and goodbye… I have been taking a break from social media for my mental health,” he wrote in a post dated six weeks after his last one. “Please take the time to watch my video and should you feel inclined to share it with anyone who it may resonate with — it would be greatly appreciated. Love to you all, and let’s get talking about mental health.”

Starting the video in true Holland style, he said he has been at it for an hour now. “For someone that has spent the last 13 to 14 years — however long that I have been acting — is it that long? It probably is that long. I can’t seem to say what I need to say without umm-ing or err-ing every five minutes,” he said before getting to the point. “I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming. I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online, and ultimately it is very detrimental to my mental state so I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”

In his “very very brief return” to Instagram, he promoted a charity providing services to those struggling with their mental health. Shining a light on “their fantastic work” he said, “There is an awful stigma against mental health and I know that asking for help and seeking help is not something we should be ashamed of but it is much easier said than done.”

Acknowledging the difficulties of reaching out for help, Holland encouraged his followers to start talking about it and help the charities help others.
