We need your help to ensure the survival of an estimated 200,000 people in Karachi's katchi abadis.
After extensive nationwide relief operations spanning 15 years, Dawn Relief continues its responsibility by distributing food rations to Karachi’s poorest one percent, concentrated in katchi abadis in Baldia and Orangi townships.
Using a methodology based on the collation of authentic and credible data sources, Dawn Relief has identified the neediest one percent of Karachi’s population.
A population already severely underprivileged and which mirrors the plurality and profusion of the languages spoken across Pakistan – be they Balochi, Hindko, Kacchi, Pashto, Punjabi, Seraiki, Sindhi or Urdu.
The livelihood of these families is solely dependent on the daily wages their breadwinners earn – a sole source of income that ended abruptly due to the prevailing lockdown.
The sad reality is that these families who mirror Pakistan’s diversity, and are among its poorest, have acquiesced to the temporary sacrifice of their livelihoods to attain the self-isolation the pandemic demands.
Should we be heartless and ignore their contribution?
We have already begun to provide support to a significant number of these families by delivering food ration boxes to their doorsteps.
Our eventual target is to mobilise support for 28,500+ families (an estimated 200,000 women, men and children) throughout Ramazan, and if possible, until the lockdown is over.
Each ration box contains: 10 kilos of flour, 5 kilos of rice, 3 kilos of lentils, 3 litres of cooking oil, powdered milk and spices. Each box can sustain a family of seven for one week.
Cost: Rs 2,500 per box; 4 boxes, which can last the duration of Ramzan (four weeks), cost Rs 10,000.
