Talal Chaudhry was caught on camera making insulting remarks about Firdous Ashiq Awan

The PML-N politician is just the latest lawmaker to make demeaning comments about women in public.
Updated 22 May, 2019

Last night a video began circulating on social media that shows PML-N politician Talal Chaudhry making some inappropriate comments about Special Assistant to PM on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan.

While commenting on the state of the nation he said: "This is the kind of tabdeeli ... if Baji Firdous Ashiq Awan got her face washed, the way her real looks would emerge from behind her makeup... she would appear as Firdous Khan instead. This is also the real face of this tabdeeli."

Chaudhry obviously intended to criticise Firdous Ashiq Awan's looks by comparing her to a 'man', the implication being that anything other than a narrow definition of femininity is abhorrent. The lawmaker apologised on Twitter soon after the backlash started, writing that his intention was never to degrade anyone and "if what I said was inappropriate, then I'm sorry about that."

That said, what is the need to make insulting remarks of a personal nature targeting any public figure, be it man or woman?

Thankfully, many have called out Chaudhry's remarks.

Some also pointed out how just a few days ago, following an iftar called by leaders of all opposition parties, people began making sexist jokes linking Maryam Nawaz to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

It appears that the practice of demeaning female public figures is the only belief that unites people across party lines.

This is the tradition set by the Niazi and the gang, so it is time for them to enjoy it now... Personally, I hate such kind of talking and don't support these manners and behaviour.

Normally, people who have infority complex make such disgraceful comments about women and honest politicians. Talal Chaudhry is a convicted politician and trying to come back through different means including making unjust remarks and having cheap publicity.

That guy took no time to apologize. That is a good indicator that he realized his mistakes. It should be appreciated, no need to further stretch the issue.

People like Talal Chaudhry have to be very careful before opening their mouth about degrading women, they mustn't forget that their mothers, wifes and daughters are also women and expect well deserved respect. Don't forget without women, we men wouldn't had been on this world. Such people are disgraceful and have low mentality!

It was not new from PMLN, they did it against Nusrat Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Shireen Mazari. They used Rehan Khan through her book for character assassin of Imran Khan. They put antic smuggling case against Jamima Khan. They made Jamima a Jews agent....the list is long.

A 10 year old girl was raped, tortured and killed in Islamabad. Police refused to file FIR. This is what corruption and poverty does: make animals out of humans. PML-N and PPP are not a bit shameful for sending us into a debt trap. Pakistan is such an unfair society.

Although Talal Chaudhry's comments were highly distasteful for a colleague woman lawmaker but, such comments made in closed circle should not become issues of media projection.

Difficult to decide in which way should an observer lean. There's no doubt what Talal uttered is something that should be snubbed but in the case of Ms. Awan, who is usually pretty much unbridled and out of control, exceptions might be considered that would essentially throw objections to Talal's comments in a grey zone. Touch call.
