Meesha Shafi accuses Ali Zafar of sexual harassment, encourages women to break ‘culture of silence’

"If this can happen to someone like me, an established artist, then it can happen to any young woman," says Shafi
Updated 20 Apr, 2018

Popular singer, model and actress Meesha Shafi took to Twitter today to allege that musician and actor Ali Zafar subjected her to sexual harassment on more than one occasion.

“Today, I speak up because my conscience does not allow me to be silent anymore,” said Meesha in her statement. “If this can happen to someone like me, an established artist, then it can happen to any young woman hoping to break into the industry and that concerns me gravely.”

She continued: “I have been subjected, on more than one occasion, to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar. These incidences did not happen when I was young, or just entering the industry. This happened to me despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind! This happened to me as a mother of two children.”

Ali Zafar has responded to Shafi's allegations of sexual harassment on Twitter, saying that he categorically denies "any and all claims of harassment lodged against me by Ms Shafi". He added that he intends to take the matter to court.

Shafi is a prominent figure in Pakistan’s entertainment industry: she has featured prominently in Coke Studio, in international cinema like The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and local drama serials like Mor Mahal. She is a vocal supporter of human rights; she featured in UN Women Pakistan’s recent campaign that aimed to raise awareness about violence against women, and on social media she has also come out in support of the #MeToo movement.

Zafar is known for well-known musical tracks like ‘Channo’ and 'Rockstar', his appearance in Bollywood films like Tere Bin Laden and Kill Dil, and he will be starring in upcoming production Teefa in Trouble. He is also a regular fixture on Coke Studio and is a sought-after artiste for large-scale events such as Lux Style Awards and PSL.

Though several Pakistani celebrities have come forward to reveal their personal experience of child sexual abuse as part of the #MeToo movement – most notably Frieha Altaf and Maheen Khan – Shafi’s statement accusing Zafar of harassment is the first instance of a Pakistani entertainer publicly calling out a peer for sexual misconduct.

Prior to this, in the small, interconnected and close-knit community that is the Pakistani entertainment industry, rumours of misconduct floated around through “whisper networks” and public confrontations were rare.

Speaking to Images, Shafi says: “When the incident happened, the very first person I told was my husband. Shortly after that I spoke about this incident to someone on my team, and one of my friends.”

Speaking of her own anxiety about coming forward, Shafi says: “It shouldn’t be this difficult to speak out when one is in the right. As parents, we tell our children to speak up if somebody touches them inappropriately and that it is never their fault. So why is it this hard to do the same? One shouldn’t have to be this brave to report sexual misconduct. I’ve had support around me, I consider myself an empowered woman, and I still had such a hard time with this decision. By speaking up I hope I’m able to break this chain of hesitation that holds us back from speaking up. I’m doing this not only for myself, but also for people who might be watching me, especially young women, who have the right to enter any professional or communal space without fearing harassment."

Images got in touch with Shafi’s mother, actress Saba Hamid, who supports her daughter's decision to speak publicly.

“I am totally behind my daughter and I support her,” says Hamid. “I’m hurt and angry and I feel very strongly about this. That this can happen with someone like Meesha who is so empowered is a rude awakening.”

“Previously, women weren’t even allowed to speak up about things like this. This has to stop. We need to tell our men this is not ok. No matter how minor or major harassment is, it leaves a scar. To heal this wound one has to talk about it,” she continues.

This is a developing story and will be updated to reflect latest news.

If our celebrities so keen to talk about women i strongly suggest talk about both gender. #justice4father #justice4men #justiceforwomen #stopblackmailing #stopharassing

Imagine if it was the other way round and Ali Zafar had accused Meesha Shafi of harassing of him. Would any one had taken his word at its face value. Absolutely not and that is where I have a problem with the movement. I think the Metoo movement is now being used to settle personal scores. If he is indeed guilty make an example out of him and Ms. Shafi should provide proof of her claim. If there is nothing to prove, the example should that be of Meesha Shafi!

In most of the harassment incidents, the oppressor takes advantage of women’s helplessness, vulnerability and the fact that they don’t raise their voices. Girls studying in universities, colleges and work place refrain from communicating such issues to their parents for the fear of their educational and job careers being jeopardized. Many harassment victims are hushed down just because they are looked down upon in the society and no legal reports are filed. Most women are unaware of the fact that the law of Pakistan gives them full protection against sexual harassment. It has become very crucial that efforts should be made to spread this awareness so that every single female gets to know what harassment really is and how to handle such issues by self-protection and by the means of law enforcement. If all the women of Pakistan start acknowledging their rights and decide to stand up to sexual harassment, more than 80 percent of the issues will be resolved or might not even take place.

@Rimal why are you disgusted and disturbed without knowing the other side of the story ? Do you just assume that her allegations must be honest and accountable ? In sorry to say but that is very naive .

@Dr. Kassim will you give any chance to the accuser and Ali to prove in a court of law? its sad to hear such allegations but coming to conclusion immediately is another below to justice.. let them go to court and the culprit in jail.. i really want to see justice here. cannt let this go just a news,, this must get concrete conclusion..

This is a serious issue and deserves to be investigated ptoperly. It's unfortunate that a woman/man can destroy someone's reputation by making an allegation of sexual harassment or loose character. This is a very serious issue and should be investigated and guilty party should be named shamed and punished.

I'm sorry, but somehow this statement by Meesha doesn't seem very reliable. Seems like a pre-planned campaign to smear the name and reputation of actor-singer Ali Zafar. What are the real facts? Authorities must take cognizance and order a detailed investigation in the matter. Meanwhile, 'media trial'should not be done on the basis of accusations.

@ Dr. Kassim - i'm not a fan of Ali zafar nor i dislike him. my question to you is has this been established that he did in fact do these acts? are we already calling guilty before guilt is proven? this is very common in pakistan. a woman alleges sexual harassment and all presume guilty. we must hold our judgement until its proven otherwise. its ones words against other. so lets hold off and truth come out.

A mother of 2 does not get up one day and make such claim, it takes a lot of courage to do it. I always knew something was off about Ali Zafar, the more they pretend, the more it looks real !!

Social media is not the right forum to bring out such issues. It can be misused due to lack of evidence and other reasons. People become insensitive after a few such items which hurts the whole process-think about how quickly people get used to bombings and killings.

Just One accusation by a female is that alone sufficient to convict some one in any scenario ? come one !! we can do better !! let the due course of law prevail like any thing else in this case well and let the popular judicial courts of law in Pakistan decide on this issue !!

Meesha should stay at home and feel empowered there. The industry is a bad thing.

After reading the headline, I thought Meesha shouldn't have shared it publicly but now after reading her views I agree to her that silence is not an option. And Yes! best of Luck to Ali Zafar as well. If he can prove himself innocent than what could be great than this.

May be Meesha Shafi is right. May be Ali Zafar is a serial monster like Harvey Weinstein. However, you can not condemn a man without providing him an opportunity of being heard. Without evidence and witnesses, what Meesha Shafi says may be mere accusations.

Let both sides say what they have to say. In the end both should behave in decent and professional manner and apologise to each other. both are popular icons of our nation and millions of fans look up to them as role models & inspirational figures. Both are parents to daughters and sons. So instead of getting into this whole whirlpool of public slandering like low lifes they both should act mature and sort this nonsense out sooner than later while fully keeping their families on board. Please i appeal both Ms. Meesha Shafi and Sir Ali Zafar to resolve this matter and not indulge in such humiliating defamation issues. you both have a long way to go and earn more success in your careers. Music is the universal language of love and it does not have room for such shameless stuff. you both are acclaimed artists so don't ruin it, especially now at the prime of your careers.

@Madeeh The problem is that court believes in evidence and truth, not some thing based on statement. Also point of Meesha Shafi can not be over ruled. At least, investigation should be carried out.
