Sexual abuse isn't about sex, it's about power: Priyanka reacts to Weinstein scandal

The actress likened Hollywood to a “big boys' club" and added it's an "isolating feeling" for women in the industry
19 Oct, 2017

Priyanka Chopra is super busy these days.

The actress has two films on her hands (A Kid Like Jake, Isn't It Romantic), a hit television show (Quantico) as well as her own production company, along with a self-funded foundation for heath and education. No wonder she's a woman who won't be "put in her lane."

Speaking at the 2017 Marie Claire Power Trip, Chopra shared: "We watch the news and look for things that will be positive and that the world will be a better place but unfortunately, the world is not.”

The actress spoke to the news that recently shook Hollywood, addressing the Harvey Weinstein allegations about sexual harassment and assault.

She shared, "It's not just about sexuality. It's not about sex. It's about power." She further likened Hollywood to a "big boys club" where women are scared for their careers if they don't appease men: "The easiest thing to take away from a woman is her work."

"It's an isolating feeling which is why it's so incredible to see so many women come together and say me too, you are not alone," said the 35-year-old actress.

When asked if there are any Harvey Weinsteins in Bollywood, the Baywatch actress said, "I don't even think there's just one Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood, they're everywhere, not just here or in India but all over the world."

Chopra suggest that the solution for women is power in numbers. Strong women supporting strong women, cultivating a safer environment for future generation of us ladies.

"The fact that we can be compassionate and at the same time tough are strengths only women have. Don't allow anyone to tell you that you need to dress a certain way. When you open your mouth, you deliver," she added.

Women need easy access to a good attorney and Hollywood should make it so, and when an abuser comes before the courts and is sentenced and disgraced it will likely stop the abuse and sexual abuse of women. the show business system can afford it. The Weinstiens of the world should be outed and disgraced and in jail, and in short order.

She does a little serial or a flick in hollywood and starts passing judgments. She should restrict herself to correcting her own Bollywood's great treatment of women- known to all.

We are all smart as God has given the same brain to all of us. We all know and can sense the danger so in the end it is all about choices and everyone does have a choice so please choose wisely.

@N_Saq: Its is not always "all about choices". Rapes are by force and then there are child abusers.

@Zar Khan Wazir Atleast get your information correct. She is former Miss world, ranked in top ten world beauties and dated Hollywood's Gerald butler and Tom Hiddleston.

@Plain Talk "the little" serial you are talking about is running its third season. She won awards twice for it. Represented awards in Oscars. Done movies. Tone down your envy if you can't make it like her in Hollywood

Priyanka Chopra the most experienced, the most daring, bonafide actress, what she says is an essence of her career. A clap needs two hands, don't put all the blame on male persons, often females abused the male celebrities or famous sportmen as we read in papers of EU and USA. All those women who after 10 years or 40 years spoke of harassment, must stop this phenomenon, just meant for their names in breaking news. Basically all babies are innocent, it is the environment which moulds them. Last but not least ,we must respect women, protect them from all odds & evils.

All women make them self beautiful & attractive to turn on men. Ultimate goal is SEX. Nothing else. Almost all Indian movies old and new reflect this truth. Romance in the imaginary world , love is ultimately SEX driven.

Well how about not going with the producer alone for once to his room....and first start with the lecherous Bollywood producers. West knows how to take care of their own.

What are you guys going on in these comments about? Is it right for a man to force himself on a woman who has come looking for a job? Should the woman try to 'adjust' instead of complaining? Isnt the man's act wrong in principle? Imagine replacing her with a man in each of the harassment situations discussed and then ask yourself if this is abuse of a human being or no.

@Harmony-1© Yes you said it right. There are child abusers. When a child is sexually abused, he/she knows that it was something terribly wrong that happened and keeps it as a secret and even blames self for being in it. This whole matter of sexualized behavior need to be condemned and wherever acts against the laws are done must be severely punished.
