Varun Dhawan tweets apology after taking a dig at Kangana at this year's IIFA Awards

His apology comes after receiving backlash from fans who were not happy about his remarks regarding nepotism

The IIFA hosts this year, Saif Ali Khan and Karan Johar got together with Varun Dhawan and attempted to take digs at Kangana Ranaut on stage - pertaining to nepotism.

After receiving backlash from fans who were not happy that the trio made jokes at the expense of Ranaut, Dhawan has taken to Twitter to express his regret.

For the uninitiated, here's how it all went down: When Varun appeared on stage, Saif joked that the Dishoom actor was only there by virtue of his birth.

“You are here because of your papa (David Dhawan),” Saif quipped. Varun said: “And you’re here because of your mummy (veteran actress Sharmila Tagore).” Karan was quick to add, “I am here because of my papa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).”

Varun then went on address Karan, "There was a song in your movie, Bole chooriyan, bole kangana..."

“Kangana na hi bole toh acha hai, Kangana bohot bolti hai" (it’s better Kangana doesn’t say anything, she talks a lot)," was what the director said next.

Oh and then the three grown men said "Nepotism rocks" in unison.

To end nepotism in Bollywood lift it from Mumbai and take it to some Hindi speaking state.

It's was not funny Mr. Varun, anyway main mastermind is K Jo who actually can't digest a self confident lady give him/her a befitting reply on true issue. If K Jo rocks nepotism than why He so angry about Kangana?

Not cool !! Kangana is self made woman. No fake accent unlike........ She is proud she comes from humble background. No Godfather. Grow up guys. Can't take her on face to face and making fun on her back. Come out of your so called "South Bombay" club. She alone is enough to take on you all 3 together. Least you all can do is APOLOGISE publicly without ifs and buts. One mediocre director, another flop actor and last one just earned his new fame. No one have given you certificate of flag bearer of Bollywood.

One director is old enough to be her fathers age. Had he married at right time, his daughter would have been of Kangana's age if not older. Other one has grown up daughter of Kangana's age. Least said about left out one is better. No respect for women. Mr. Bachan and many actors like him are too self made men like Kangana. Do they have the courage and guts to make fun of them. Picked up an easy target.

Kangana , a sole female artist has blown into pieces, the entire bollywood industry's pride of nepotism which was never discussed or questioned before, all the comments that these men have been saying all this time are purely coming from hurt male egos , theres nothing substantial in these mens responses to counter what the lady had the courage to say. So afraid are the actors to speak up their minds that even those who may agree with her wholeheartedly, would never dare to speak to in support of her
