KARACHI, April 30: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali awarded a total number of 1,188 degrees to the graduates of 11 institutes of the Hamdard University, including Usman Institute of Technology.

He also distributed 43 gold medals among position-holders and five Hakim Mohammad Said Shaheed gold medals to the students for their outstanding performance.

Prime Minister Jamali, who was the chief guest at the 7th annual convocation announced a grant of Rs 10 million for the university.

On the occasion, the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris Causa) was also conferred on Prof Dr H.C. Wolfgang Voelter of Germany for his eminence in the field of science and technology and distinguished service to the cause of nation.

Besides, Amin Mohammad and Amera Raza were awarded degrees of doctor of philosophy in the faculty of humanities and social sciences while Parveen Munshi and Umme Rubab Fazal were conferred degree of philosophy in education.

The three bright graduates who were awarded four medals each for securing first position in all first, second, third and final professional MBBS and BEMS examinations are Naghmana Akhtar of Batch-1 1996, Iram Nazir of Batch-II 1997 of MBBS and Humera of Batch 1997 of BEMS.

The recipients of Hakim Muhammad Said Shaheed gold medals were Mohammad Kamran Adam of faculty of Engineering sciences and technology, Mehnaz Mohammad Iqbal Chagani of faculty of management sciences, Laila Abdul Rasool of faculty of humanities and social sciences, Humera of faculty of Eastern Medicine and Yousaf Jalil of faculty of health and medical sciences.

Addressing the convocation, Prime Minister Jamali said that future of the country was bright as our people were quite talented and can compete anyone in the world.

Recalling that education is the key to progress for any country, he said we have no option but to work hard and acquire high skills and specialization in education and other respective fields to match the world.

He lauded the role of the Hamdard University in the field of education and paid rich tributes to late Hakim Muhammad Said with whom he came into interaction in the 80s.

Earlier, Chancellor of the University Justice Ajmal Mian, welcoming the chief guest, hoped that the prime minister would be able to create congenial relationship with the President to facilitate the restoration of a real democracy in the country, which is sine qua none for the restoration of the rule of law and economic progress of the country.

He said that democracy subsists on the two basic human values, freedom and equality which also receives sustenance from our own religion.

“Since freedom and equality cannot keep company with ignorance, neither the democratic process nor an Islamic society can survive without education”, he pointed.

Vice Chancellor Dr Ismail Saad said that the neglect of social sectors, most specially of health and education had enhanced the sense of deprivation among the people and the consequences were too glaring to be ignored.

He termed the university as structural expression of Hakim sahib’s aspirations and concept of higher education in Pakistan.

The vice chancellor also gave a brief resume of different institutions of the Hamdard University and their performance and the problems being faced by the students and requested the prime minister to ask the city government to extend routes of the Green Buses to the university campus and extend amenities such as the supply of drinkable water at nominal rates.

Other recipients of the gold medals were Mumtaz and Rahila Akram for M.Ed, Rizwan, Laila Abdul Rasool, Mehmooda Zareen, Humera Wilson and Bushra Zahid of different batches for securing first position in B.Ed.

The following are the details of degrees awarded:

Institute of Education and Social Sciences: The total number of graduates included 100 — Ph.Ds (4), M.Ed (29), and B.Ed.(67)

Institute of Management Sciences (main campus) Total graduates (179): 101 MBAs, 70 BBA (Hons), 7 BBAs (four year), 1 PGD (Informatics).

Institute of Management Sciences (city campus): 153 students, including 143 MBAs and 10 PGD(BA).

Institute of Information Technology: 130 students, including 16 MS(IT), 92 BE (IT), 21 BCS, 1 PGD(AIT),

College of Medicine and Dentistry: 98 students in MBBS.

Islamic International Medical College Rawalpindi 170 students in MBBS.

Al-Majeed College of Eastern Medicine: 29 students in BEMS,

Usman Institute of Technology: 113 students, including 16 MCS, 27 BCS, 54 BE(Computer system) and 16 BE (electronics).

Shaukat Surraiya College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences: 9 students in BA (arts).

Hamdard University Islamabad campus (Ibadat): 132 students, including 65 in MBA, 5 MS(IT), 33 in MCS and 29 BBA.

Hamdard University Islamabad Campus: 75 students, including 39 MBA, 1 MS(IT), 22 MCS and 13 in BBA.

Others who were also awarded gold medals for securing first position in their examinations are:

Mohammad Akram Adam in MS (IT) 2002, Murtaza Taj fall-1998, Ammar Hassan Spring-1998 and Siraj-ul-Haque Spring-1998 who were awarded for BE(IT).

Roshan Zameer in MCS 2000-2002, Asif Naseem Khan in BCS 1999-2002, Hira Afzal in BCS 2002, Imran Arshad in BE (Computer system) 1999-2002, Hashaam Muneef Qureshi in BE (Electronics) 1999-2002, Misbah Syed in BA (Arts).

Yousaf Jalil in first, second and final professional MBBS 1997, Syeda Samia Fatima in third professional MBBS-1997.
