KARACHI: Kunwar Khalid acquitted

KARACHI, Dec 1: An additional district and sessions judge, Ghulam Qadir Leghari, acquitted on Saturday Kunwar Khalid Younus and Dr Farooq Sattar, leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, in two cases.

The Muttahida leaders were acquitted of all charges as the prosecution could not bring any incriminating evidence against them.

One of the cases (239/94) was registered against the Muttahida leaders in 1994 under sections 147, 148, 149, 302, 336, 109 and 120-B of PPC by the New Karachi police.

Party chief Altaf Husain, Dr. Saghir Ansari, S. M. Mohiuddin, Haroon Siddiqui, Waseem Akhtar and A. K. Shams were declared absconders in this case.

The second case was registered by the same police under sections 147, 148, 149, 335, 336 and 109 of PPC.

Altaf Husain, S. M. Mohiuddin, Dr Saghir Ansari, A. K. Shams, Haroon Siddiqui, Waseem Akhtar and Yousuf Khan were absconders in this case.

So far, Kunwar Khalid Younus has been acquitted in 74 cases.

The same court acquitted Dr Farooq Sattar, former mayor of Karachi, in another case registered by the Nazimabad police under sections 353, 436, 427 and 324 of PPC.

Altaf Husain, Prof. A. K. Shams, S. M. Mohiuddin, Haroon Ahmed, Dr Saghir Ansari and Yousuf Khan were declared absconders in this case.

There were a total of 21 cases against the former mayor. He has been released in seven cases so far.

CONVICTED: An additional district and sessions judge, South, Hafeeza Usman, sentenced a man to a five years’ imprisonment with a fine of Rs1,000 for injuring a woman.
