KARACHI, March 12: Filthy water is continuously being supplied to various parts of Old Golimar for many days causing various problems like vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea to the consumers in the affected localities.
The worst sufferers are the residents of Saleh Mohammad Village, Mauladad Village, Noor Mohammad Village, Haji Pariya Village and their adjoining localities.
The residents said that a number of women, children and elderly people had already fallen sick with diarrhoea and other stomach ailments after consuming the filthy, apparently sewage-mixed, water.
They complained that although they had been receiving stinking yellowish water for the last 10 days, the concerned officials of the city government’s Water and Sanitation Department had not yet bothered even to rectify the fault.
“We have also brought the issue to the notice of our area Nazim but it seems that he, too, is helpless in getting the problem solved,” deplored a senior citizen living in Saleh Mohammad Village.
A perturbed resident of Mauladad Village said that possibility of potable water getting mixed with sewage could not be ruled out as the locality’s water line ran parallel to a number of drains elsewhere through its course.
“In the absence of clean water through pipelines, we have no choice but to fetch water from the wells of nearby mosques or buy private tankers at an exorbitantly high rate,” remarked another resident of the Old Golimar.
Suspecting that sewage water might be seeping into the pipeline of their localities, the residents demanded of the city Nazim and the executive district officer of the Water and Sanitation Department to immediately issue directives to the concerned officials to remove the fault causing the contamination. They warned that if appropriate measures were not taken now, more and more people would suffer from diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.
SHORTAGE: Various parts of the former districts West, East and South experienced acute water shortage for the fifth consecutive day, Wednesday.
The hard-hit areas are Khokhrapar No 1-1/2, Saudia Colony, Malir, Kharadar, Mithadar, Pakistan Chowk, Orangi’s Sector 11-1/2, Baloch Colony, Benazir Colony, several sectors of Baldia and Surjani townships, North Karachi’s Sector 5-D, 11-C-1 (Sir Syed Town) and Buffer Zone’s Sector 15-A5.
Residents of the affected areas said that their localities were either without water or receiving scant supply for the last five days but the concerned officials had not yet taken measures to restore normal supply despite repeated complaints during the period.
Residents of Khokhrapar No 2-1/2 regretted that on the one hand, they were deprived of water during Muharram and, on the other, considerable quantity of water was going waste from a leaking pipeline in their locality.
Residents of Saudia Colony urged the city Nazim and the EDO of W&S department to restore normal supply to their localities as they could not afford costly tanker water for such a long period.
