KARACHI: 77 vehicles hijacked in a week

KARACHI, Feb 23: Seventy-seven vehicles — 16 cars and 61 motorbikes — were either hijacked or stolen in the city during the last one week,

Bandits hijacked nine cars and stole seven others from Feb 17-23, according to the statistics issued by the Central Police Office.

Twenty-one motorcycles were hijacked and 40 others were stolen.

Four cars each were taken away on Wednesday and Friday. The highest number of incidents of motorcycle snatching/stealing took place on Sunday when the bandits took away 15 motorbikes in separate localities.

The police claimed that 15 cars and 20 motorcycles were recovered during the week. The police recovered 15 cars out of the 16 taken away. However, the police recovered only 20 motorbikes out of the 40 taken away, which showed the recovery rate was 50 per cent.

BODY FOUND: The body of a teacher was found on his bed in his Gulshan-i-Iqbal home on Sunday.

Police said Prof Safdar Malik was found in a pool of blood when his wife with her three children returned home from her parents’ house on Sunday. She rang the doorbell and when she received no response, she informed her neighbours, who broke open the door and found the body of the professor.

The police believed the professor shot himself to death as a pistol was also found next to his body.

Duty officer Mohammad Ismail at Mobina Town police station said: “We just know that the deceased was a teacher at a school or college in Malir City. We have completed the legal proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC and are investigating the case. The Investigation Homicide wing will initiate its work after we register the murder case. Since we are satisfied that it is a suicide, why should we register a case.”

He said a pistol was found beside the body and a bullet hit the temple of the deceased, which clearly indicated that Safdar shot himself to death. However, the police failed to find the cause that led Safdar to take the extreme step.

BOY DROWNS: A five-year-old boy was feared to have drowned in a well near his home in Malir City.

Police and Edhi volunteers reached the spot to search for the boy in the well and till our going to press efforts were in progress. The identity of the body could also not be established immediately.

KILLING: A newly-married man was clubbed to death allegedly by his in-laws in Mehmoodabad on Saturday.

Sajid Hussain, 25, married a cousin in Kashmir and brought her to Kashmir Colony in Mehmoodabad. Sajid’s father-in-law, Ahmed Deen, along his other relatives came to the house of Sajid, where they had a scuffle with him. Ahmed Deen and his relatives beat Sajid severely with clubs, kicks and blows. Sajid suffered head injuries and was taken to the Jinnah Hospital, where he died on Saturday night.

The police registered a case on the complaint of Ishtiaq Hussain, the deceased’s brother but no arrest has so far been made.

SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead at an eating house in Kalakot on Sunday night.

The police said Saadat Khan, was having dinner at an eating house when some unidentified men shot at and wounded him.
