KARACHI, Feb 22: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has expressed concern over large scale transfers and postings of police officers in Karachi and said that these officers have a remarkable record of fulfilling their duties.

Speaking at the inauguration of Sibghatullah Shah Shaheed Road, from the National Stadium to the Drive-in Cinema, he said that these police officers had been awarded medals for their contributions to restoration of peace in the city and their transfer out of the city could cause serious law and order problems.

He stated that maintenance of law and order in the city was the responsibility of the City Nazim and, therefore, he should also be consulted before the home department took any such major decision.

Referring to a speech of President Pervez Musharraf in which he had directed the Sindh cabinet not to interfere in transfers and postings, Naimatullah Khan deplored that soon after the directive a new wave of transfers had been witnessed.

The City Nazim said he could not remain quiet while important decision about the city were being taken and demanded that he should be consulted prior to any major decision of this kind.—PPI
