KARACHI, Feb 10: The President, who is also the chancellor of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, has appointed Dr Jamiluddin Aali as deputy chairperson of the varsity’s senate.

Mr Aali has been appointed to the post on the recommendations of the chairman, Higher Education Commission, according to an official notification.

The deputy chairperson would preside over the varsity senate, among other functions, in the absence of the chancellor.

Meanwhile, the authorities have finalized names of the members of the senate and an official notification is likely to be issued soon.

The members of the senate, as finalized by the competent authorities, but yet to be notified, are as follows:

Dr Pirzada Qasim, G. Allana (Hyderabad), Dr Farman Fatehpuri (Karachi), Dr Tariq Rehman (Islamabad), Dr Hassan Raza (Quetta), Mr Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi (Lahore), Bano Qudsia (Lahore), Prof Fateh Mohammad Malik (Islamabad), Prof Mohsin Ehsan (Peshawar), Dr Shahid Hussain (Karachi), two university teachers of the ranks of professors (to be elected), President of the Anjuman Taraqqi-i-Urdu or his nominee, a nominee of the higher education commission, federal education secretary (ex-officio).

The first meeting of the senate is likely to be held in the first week of March.

The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, has been established with its headquarters in Islamabad.

At present, the two campuses of the Urdu Arts and Urdu Science colleges at Karachi are constituent parts of the university. Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui is the vice chancellor of the university.

Under the statutory provisions, the federal education minister is the pro-chancellor of the university and he or she is authorized to preside over the varsity convocation in the absence of the Pro-chancellor.

The education minister has not been included in the varsity senate, sources said.
