HYDERABAD, Feb 9: The newly-appointed District Coordination Officer, Shakeel Hussain Naqvi, has directed the Water and Sanitation Agency to desilt sewers on an emergency basis.
He issued orders in this regard on Sunday while visiting the city areas, including Hyder Chowk, Sarfaraz Colony Chowk, Qadamgah-i-Maula Ali, Shah Makki Road as well as Makrani Para and Barkat Bhai pumping stations.
Mr Naqvi said that desilting would enhance the capacity of sewers and minimize the chances of overflow.
The managing director of Wasa, Tahir Ahmed accompanied the DCO on the occasion.
The DCO stressed the need to improve the sewerage system in three talukas, Hyderabad city, Latifabad and Qasimabad, saying that the people had suffered unhygienic conditions for the past couple of months.
He asked Wasa to prepare contingency plans for better regulation and segregation of the sewage flow.
Rehabilitation centre: The rehabilitation centre for physically handicapped persons will be shifted from its existing location to the newly-constructed Social Welfare Complex during this month.
This was stated by the Executive District Officer, community development, Hyderabad, Ibrahim Qureshi while speaking at a ceremony for distribution of Eid gifts among the disabled persons at the Latifabad centre here on Saturday.
The ceremony was organised by the management of the rehabilitation centre.
He said that a resource management committee, comprising government officers, economic experts and social workers, was being formed by the district government for identification and effective utilization of resources, available in the district, to eliminate the menace of poverty.
Mr Qureshi said that the district government was wasting many resources due to improper management and communication though the resources could be utilised on development,.
Stressing the need for evolving a strategy for better utilization of available resources with greater community participation, he said that the district government was planning to hold a seminar for implementation of its policies.
Speaking on the occasion, social worker Syed Dost Ali Shah stressed the need for providing better care and facilities to disabled persons, adding that it was the responsibility of parents, philanthropists and government institutions to look after disabled persons.
He announced cash Eid gifts for the disabled persons, housed in the rehabilitation centre and the Darul Atfal, besides offering financial assistance for every project, aimed at welfare of special children.
The assistant director of the rehabilitation centre, Ali Bux Umrani, said that about 448 disabled persons had been provided training of different trades and given government jobs.
Later, the EDO and Mr Shah distributed Eid gifts and cash among the special persons and the children of the Darul-Atfal.
